This article reviews the impact of standards on the work of the engineer, with illustrations from the switchgear industry. Not many engineers are familiar with the processes and objectives of the international standards industry, so a brief description of its workings is given; then its output is critically analysed with the intention of making the working engineer question the importance to his industry of the work going on. If it is concluded that the provision of these standards is beneficial, then it is recommended that industry takes a stronger interest in the process

This article presents the results of a project involving the measurement of distribution system harmonics on nominal 13.2 kV radial distribution systems. Measurements were taken on seven different distribution systems during the course of the project. The harmonics present on these systems were due to distributed harmonic sources. The measurement system and the analysis of the data from the measurements are presented. The analysis shows that similar harmonic patterns exist on these systems.

The success of the ‘Monergy’ campaign has led to an improved level of energy awareness in many industries. The level of good housekeeping and the standards of thermal insulation have increased, and many heat-recovery schemes using heat exchangers have been installed. For further improvements to be made more sophisticated techniques are required and the efficient use of industrial heat pumps, when correctly applied, is for many industries the most cost-effective remaining option. Heat pumps often also carry other added benefits, such as easier process control and improved product quality
