Regular testing of protection relays is vital to maintain the integrity of electrical power transmission and distribution systems. Until recently, such testing was time consuming and required a high level of engineering skill. New developments in automatic relay test sets allow more efficient deployment of skilled personnel and permit more frequent testing which will lead to an overall improvement in power-system operational reliability

Electrical machines play an important part in the lives of all of us: in power generation, in transport, in industry and in our homes. They are very much taken for granted, yet there have been many interesting developments and innovations, which have led, for example, to great increases in power per unit volume, reduced cost, improved efficiency and reliability and greater controllability. This article discusses some examples, draws attention to the technologies which have contributed to the developments, and shows the importance of an improved knowledge of electromagnetics. In addition, some of the many developments in computer aids to electromagnetic design will be described

The CEGB high-merit 500MW coal-fired units were originally designed for an operating life of 150000 hours. Many of these units have now exceeded 100000 hours operation, and it has been decided to pursue a policy of life extension in order to obtain lives in excess of 250000 hours. This is a far cheaper option than building new stations which may only have marginally better thermal efficiencies
