摘要:
AbstractThis paper presents the results of an exploratory study into the health concerns of women in South Wales. The objective was to obtain information on the way in which women view their own health and the health issues that concern them. The research design replicated a study carried out in Canada by one of the authors. Sixty‐five women were interviewed using a structured interview schedule. The core question on the interview schedule took respondents through a list of 68 health and social problems. They were asked to indicate whether they had been worried about or had experienced any of these problems in the previous 6 months. The results support the findings of the Canadian research that reproductive health is not central to women's health concerns. On the contrary, among the most frequently mentioned problems were tiredness, stress, headaches and arthritis. The most frequently mentioned social problem was worrying about money. Women linked their health concerns with other problems such as unemployment, problems combining child care and paid employment and worrying about money. These problems created stress and, in turn, stress either led directly to ill health or else helped to foster ‘unhealthy’ life styles. Women were aware of the possibly harmful effects on health of smoking or drinking, for example, but resorted to them in order to cope with their stressful lives. One of the main conclusions of the study is that it is essential to incorporate women's health concerns into the policy‐making process. Women's main health concerns are related to the stressful nature of their lives and, particularly in South Wales, to poverty and unemployment. So‐called unhealthy lifestyles are often a response to stress and enable women to cope. This needs to be taken into consideration by health promoters. Finally, more research is required into women's health concerns and their understanding of health an

摘要:
AbstractThis paper describes an attempt to calculate the cost to agencies of receiving professional social work students on placement. It demonstrates that it costs significantly more per month to supervise a first‐placement than a final‐placement student and that, although practice teachers report positive gains for themselves and their agencies from having students, these are greatly diminished if the students are of poor quality or ‘still present difficulties’. It is concluded that, although the provision of placements may bring intangible benefits to agency personnel with respect to morale and staff development, the costs incurred, especially when the students are judged to be ‘on the margins of professional competence’, are not insignificant, and resources should be made available in order to ensure a high‐quality hands‐on experience for the next generation of social wor

摘要:
AbstractThis paper presents an overview of findings from an evaluation of the Birmingham Community Care Special Action Project (CCSAP). CCSAP was intended to deliver an inter‐agency, user‐oriented strategy for community care. It pre‐dated the reforms introduced by the National Health Service and Community Care Act and, indeed, may have influenced some aspects of those reforms. Lessons from the evaluation can assist agencies wishing to develop a strategy for user involvement. In particular, the evaluation indicated the need to be clear about: the purposes of involvement; who it is intended should be involved; importance of establishing effective mechanisms both to secure action in response to issues raised, and the continuation and development of involvement itself. The evaluation contributed to the development of involvement and this experience has also enabled us to reflect on the contribution research can play in the development of user involvement strat

摘要:
AbstractTo a large extent the health care needs of people with learning disabilities living in the community have been neglected by policy makers, purchasers and providers. One result is that the role of carers, paid and unpaid, in monitoring and promoting health has been ignored. This article reports on interviews with carers and is drawn from a study which examined the delivery of primary health care to people with learning disabilities. A range of topics was covered during interview including: carers’ perceptions of their role, contact with and assessment of general practitioners’(GPs’) skills, difficulties experienced during consultations, views about medication, health promotion and health screening. Results indicated that insufficient attention is paid to the needs of people with learning disabilities in respect of health promotion, health screening and regular hearing and sight tests. Whilst generally satisfied with the care provided by GPs, carers made many suggestions about how to improve the standard of care offered. Suggestions for supporting paid and unpaid carers in order to fulfil their role are made. The need for joint strategies at the operational level and strategic level is also disc
