Recent research has suggested that for a number of economies, aggregate output does not behave in a stationary way about a fixed trend Campbell and Mankiw have provided much evidence, and their techniques are adopted here to indicate that Australia's national output has behaved in a way similar to that of other similar economies.

This paper presents a novel approach to the difficult problem of society choosing the optimal set of policy instruments to control the spread of AIDS. This paper focuses on the allocation of Australian bilateral aid to developing countries. It simultaneously models the determination of potential recipients' eligibility for Australian aid and the amounts of aid that eligible countries receive. A variant of the econometric technique developed by Lee and Maddala (1985) is utilized. The results obtained indicate that the decisions underlying the allocation of Australian bilateral aid generally seem consistent with the humanitarian, commercial, political and strategic motives underlying the aid program as a whole.

The crash of 87 spawned considerable interest in economic cycles. This article surveys the literature on long swings of 50 years or so in economic activity. It also explores the conduits through which long swings in production and prices could be carried to share prices, and finally examines the empirical evidence for low frequency cycles in Australia's past and recent economic history.
