摘要:
Cross‐sectional estimates of the comparative wage performance of natives and immigrants can be distorted if there are changes in labour market quality between immigrant cohorts. This question is investigated with a study of 1973 and 1981 cross‐sections of Australian migrants. We find that migrants from non‐English‐speaking countries entering Australia about 1965 perform significantly better between 1973 and 1981 than predicted from the 1973 cross‐section. Migrants from English‐speaking countries time‐series wage performance is consistent with the 1973 cross‐section prediction. The paper interprets the analytic importance o

摘要:
Using a simple model of a small open economy which includes traded and non‐traded goods and output in two periods, we demonstrate that changes in real interest rates will be associated with changes in real exchange rates. A high real interest rate will encourage consumers to substitute away from present and toward future consumption. To transfer consumption of non‐traded goods intertemporally, intersectoral resource flows are required In the simplest model, this in turn requires opposite movements in the real exchange rate over two peri

摘要:
This paper considers the role of the SRD requirement as an instrument of monetary policy. It argues that the mere presence of the SRD requirement and neither the value of the SRD ratio nor its variability over time defines the significance of the SRD for monetary policy. A decision to abolish the SRD requirement may destabilize the demand for cash and complicate the task of the monetary authorities. Payment of interest on SRD accounts would serve to alleviate the distorting effect of the SRD requirement on the pattern of financial intermediation.

摘要:
Contrary to previous findings, the new index of sex segregation derived in this study suggests that sex segregation in the Australian workforce has been increasing. A decomposition of this new index indicates that the main reason for the increase is the increasing share of employment held by females. The decomposition also considers a number of aspects of occupations including growth rates, skill levels and gender domination.

摘要:
This paper attempts to clarify the theoretical status and the empirical role of measures of ‘international competitiveness’ that have been used in econometric demand for labour equations. Some currently popular alternatives are finked to a simple version of the Salter‐Swan‐Dornbusch (‘Australian‘) dependent economy model which is found to provide insufficient basis for choosing between alternative measures, which in the Australian case at least are found to behave rather differently. In explaining employment in Australia during the period 1971‐83, the preferred competitiveness variable is found to play a marginal role only with estimated long‐run elasticity similar to that for the

摘要:
The purpose of this paper is to explore the relevance of Tobin's ‘q theory’ of investment in explaining aggregate investment in Australia, over the period from December 1966 to December 1986. Using standard capital stock data, the q theory performs poorly. However, the cost of adjustment model implies that the conventional capital stock data need to be revised to allow for these adjustment costs. Once this is done, it is found that the q theory explains a statistically significant (although small) proportion of the movements in aggregate investment The residual behaviour of investment is well explained by an accelerator m
