摘要:
AbstractPurdue Control Modules (PCM) are introduced as a set of programs written in the MATLAB/SIMULINK environment, which are meant to be used in the instruction of an undergraduate course on process dynamics and control. The modules are based on fundamental process models of industrial unit operations (distillation column and heated‐tube furnace), and incorporate a realistic graphical user interface to emulate an industrial control environment. © 1996 John Wiley&Sons, I

摘要:
AbstractThis article describes how an industrial‐scale real‐time computing platform, namely, the Honeywell TDC3000, has been incorporated into the undergraduate process control course at Arizona State University. The mixing tank dynamics and gas‐oil furnace control experiments described here are among 11 laboratory exercises developed for this course which provide students with unique insights on life‐cycle issues in control, real‐time system architecture and information needs, and the benefits of “off‐line” computer‐aided design tools. © 1996 Jo

摘要:
AbstractPicles™, the Process Identification and Control Loop Explorer System, is IBM‐PC‐compatible software now being used in process dynamics and control courses around the world. Picles is an easy‐to‐use training simulator that provides hands‐on experience to those studying this often abstract and mathematic subject. Picles contains a number of real‐world processes and controller algorithms, animated in color‐graphic display, for exploration and learning. One big contribution this software makes to the educational process is that Picles provides a convenient means for exploring real‐world applications of a broad range of theoretical concepts. Such hands‐on reinforcement of theory creates a learning environment never before possible for this subject. © 1996

摘要:
AbstractUnique features of the undergraduate process control course described in this article are that (1) an internal model control framework is used to develop PID controller design methodologies for very general processes, (2) process uncertainty is incorporated into the design methodology using MATLAB‐based software that we call IMCTUNE, and (3) all exams are open book, open notes, and open computer. © 1996 John Wiley&Sons, I

摘要:
AbstractA semianalytical technique is presented using Maple to solve coupled nonlinear partial differential equations (PDEs). The technique is based on analytically solving the equations resulting from discretizing the spatial coordinate of the PDEs and using quasilinearization with Newton's method to treat nonlinear terms. © 1996 John Wiley&Sons, Inc

摘要:
AbstractThe techniques presented in introductory engineering textbooks for modeling and analysis of experimental data nowadays are essentially the same as the ones that were presented over 35 years ago. Considerable potential now exists for dramatic improvements in data correlation and analysis because of the introduction of personal computers along with user‐friendly interactive software which performs linear and nonlinear regressions and yields standard statistical results. This article presents some basic statistical concepts which are required to understand the results obtained from a regression package and demonstrates, using an example of vapor pressure correlation the proper technique for modeling and analysis of experimental data. Our experience and student performance has indicated that a 1st‐year course for engineering students can effectively introduce students to the correlation and the modeling of experimental data. This capability can be given to students during two lectures and a 1‐hour computer laboratory period plus an appropriate assignment, provided that an interactive regression package (Polymath or EZfit, for example) or a spreadsheet program with multiple linear regression capabilities is available. © 1996 John Wiley&Son
