摘要:
AbstractWe explain our motivation for truly interactive dynamic‐system simulation and apply DESIRE/NEUNET software to a classical textbook problem in neural‐network pattern recognition. Neural‐network designs which can distinguish two closely spaced spirals must discriminate precisely between complicated, nonconvex pattern clusters. This classical textbook problem is quite difficult. It was finally solved by an unconventional back‐propagation network using ad hoc layer skipping and, more accurately, by Boston University's ARTMAP algorithm. We discuss competitive learning and present a new accurate solution using a counterpropagation network whose novel competitive layer separates closely spaced patterns cleanly with the CLEARN algorithm, a very fast computer routine which emulates simplified adaptive‐resonance func

摘要:
AbstractIt is often difficult for students to visualize how control theory relates to real systems. Computer simulations can help, but simulations alone are limited by how well the system in question has been modeled. In general, simulations are more helpful to engineers with sufficient experience with real systems than they are to students who may have never seen the actual systems in action. It is more enlightening if the results obtained theoretically are actually applied to a physical system. Applying the theoretically calculated results to a real system helps the student not only to visualize, but to evaluate how well the model was able to predict the system performance. To this end, a new interdisciplinary controls laboratory has been introduced jointly in the Electrical and Computer Engineering and Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Departments of Oklahoma State University.

摘要:
AbstractDevelopment of multimedia modules and courses for engineering education present a significant opportunity to modernize curricula and improve the effectiveness of teaching and learning. In this article we review the various hardware and software components required to develop multimedia lessons and discuss the role of each component in the structure of a multimedia module. Examples of multimedia lessons developed for CD‐ROM distribution by the Center for Multimedia Education and Technology (CAEME) at the University of Utah are described. These include multimedia lessons in electromagnetics, the Calculus Castle, and the Physics Museum. It is shown that although extensive resources and expertise are often needed to develop these modules, development software and associated technologies are readily available and educators are encouraged to take advantage of these opportunities to reform, restructure, and improve engineering educatio

摘要:
AbstractSome nonlinear systems of order three or higher become chaotic for certain parameter values and initial conditions. Interesting examples have been discussed in recent years, using sophisticated mathematical analysis and/or simulation. This article presents a simple method of predicting if chaos is possible and under what conditions, using classical control theory tools such as Nyquist's stability theorem and describing functions. The method is demonstrated using several examples.

摘要:
AbstractComputer animation on personal computers (PC) is becoming increasingly popular as an educational teaching aid. With the increasing CPU power and high‐resolution graphics of PC, and the rapid evolution of animation softwares, engineering courses can be developed on the PC using computer animation. Many engineering systems and processes in the engineering courses can be animated to enhance learning by university undergraduates. These animation projects could be developed into engineering courseware on certain subjects or topics for effective teaching in classrooms, at home, or as computer‐aided laboratory lessons. Several types of animation software are introduced in this arti

摘要:
AbstractThe recent introduction of Fortran 90, along with constant increases in the speed of desktop personal computers, makes direct integration an extremely viable means of computing radiation view factors. Using the new intrinsic functions and simplified array operations which are part of the Fortran 90 standard, an algorithm based on discretization of the two surfaces can be implemented in fewer than a hundred lines of code and run in only a few seconds on a typical personal computer. The basics of such an algorithm for arbitrarily oriented flat parallelograms will be reviewed in this brief note.
