摘要:
By replacing normal water intake with 0–9% saline solution on a continuing basis, animals are protected against acute is chœmic tubular necrosis. Last‐minute plasma volume expansion does not provide this protection. To see whether the protection is intrinsic to the kidney or merely involves the host, kidneys were transplanted syngeneically from salt‐drinking rats to water‐drinking rats, and vice versa, and the recipients were injected with glycerol to produce myohœmoglobinuric renal failure. The kidneys transplanted from water‐drinking animals did not develop failure in the salt‐drinking animals, but those from salt drinkers did develop failure in the water drinkers. Therefore overhydration of the recipient by continuous salt loading is important in preventing acute tubular necrosis in renal tr

摘要:
Four solutions for machine perfusion and preservation of is chœmically damaged canine kidneys were compared. They were (i) canine Cryoprecipitated plasma, (ii) canine albumin, (iii) human stable plasma protein, and (iv) human albumin. The results with both canine protein solutions were satisfactory. The solutions containing human protein were found unsuitable for canine kidney preservation. It was concluded that albumin solutions were at least as effective as cryoprecipitate for 24‐hour perfusion of ischœmically damaged canine kidn

摘要:
The prophylaxis of venous thromboembolism after operation has increased the interest in the administration of drugs which depress in‐vitro platelet function. An animal model was designed to test some of these drugs, utilizing a free‐flowing venous system in which intimal damage and platelet deposition at an electrode were primary events. Heparin, in generally recognised therapeutic doses, was the most effective drug tested; lesser doses still had a significant though diminished effect. Acetyl salicylic acid in three‐dose schedules was most effective at high plasma concentrations. Likewise, higher doses of dipyridamole were effective in preventing thrombus formation. It was interesting to note a synergistic effect of a combination of low doses of acetyl salicylic acid and dipyridamole when each agent used alone had a minor thromboprophylactic effect. High molecular weight dextran had more effect in higher doses, but at the expense of a marked prolongation of the bleeding time. The results of these animal experiments are discussed with reference to recent clinical trials of similar agents. Possible alternative mechanisms are suggested to produce the same effect as heparin in subtherapeutic

摘要:
On the basis of previous studies in rats, and clinical observations in human renal transplantation and in patients with a renal duplication anomaly, we have postulated two distinct types of renal growth. Compensatory growth is caused by a nephron deficit, while obligatory growth is part of the normal process of growing into adulthood. The former is reversible, and the latter is not. A definitive test of this hypothesis required the transplantation of extra kidneys into baby rats and comparison of their growth with that of normal litter‐mate controls. This showed that there is little if any retardation of obligatory renal growth in spite of the presence of an excess of kidneys in the bab

摘要:
The effect on tumour growth of adding heavily irradiated cells to a standard number of viable mouse melanoma tumour cells before its inoculation into the syngeneic host was investigated. It was found that admixed irradiated syngeneic tumour cells stimulated tumour growth. Irradiated syngeneic fibroblasts had no effect. Irradiated tumour cells with a strong histocompatability difference inhibited tumour growth. It is possible that this inhibitory effect was due to a stimulation of the host immune system.
