Better functional results may be expected after reattachment of amputated fingers than after more proximal amputations. A method of microvascular repair is described, illustrated by the results of reattachment of amputated digits in seven patients, and an assessment of the place of reattachment is made. Reattachment is worthwhile when it is planned to save one or two digits for opposition, but rarely in single finger injuries, and it is of decreasing value with higher amputations.

During the five‐year period from 1963 to 1968 there were 327 elective cholecystectomies, and 128 cholecystectomies carried out during an attack of acute cholecystitis. In a personal series of 35 patients diverticular disease of the colon was shown to be the most common cause of profuse bleeding; nevertheless, it accounted for only half the cases in this series. A wide variety of other lesions may be responsible for bleeding, and it is important that each patient should be very carefully assessed before the acceptance of diverticular disease as the cause of the haemorrhage.

Suprapubic bladder drainage was used in the postoperative management of 25 patients undergoing major gynecological procedures of the type following which catheterization in the ward was often required. The results were compared with those in a similar group of 25 patients for whom suprapubic drainage was not used. The procedure was found to minimize patient discomfort, ward catheterization and urinary infection, and to make the nursing management much easier.

Attention is drawn to the occurrence of a variety of tumours in the pectoralis major muscle or its deep fascial sheath. When these tumours lie deep to the female breast, difficulties in diagnosis and management occur. Their incidence in a large personal series is given, and the incidence in the case histories of the Soft Tissue Registry is also quoted. Details of the management of four patients are described.

This paper deals with our experience in the management of four patients who have come to our notice during the past 15 years, each presenting with a clinical picture strongly suggestive of bladder malignancy. Each of them had, however, some months or years prior to the development of urinary symptoms, undergone an inguinal herniorrhaphy in which silk had been used for the repair. A technique of supraclavicular subclavian vein catheterization is described. Points are made concerning the maintenance of the catheter and measurement of the central venous pressure. The indications for and complications of the use of the catheter are discussed. Alternative methods of central vein catheterization are reviewed. Five case reports are presented.
