The pharyngeal hypophysis and the pars distalis of the hypophysis cerebri were examined in each of 52 cadavers of a mean age of 75 years. Comparative studies were made of volume and histology. The pharyngeal hypophysis was found to be of appreciable volume and to represent up to 0.5% of the total adenohypophysial tissue in the cadaver. The pars distalis in the female was significantly larger than that in the male, but no significant sex difference in size was noted in the pharyngeal hypophysis. In the majority of subjects, the histological appearance of the pharyngeal hypophysis closely resembled that of the pars distalis. The findings of this investigation demonstrate that, on the basis of size and cytology, the pharyngeal hypophysis is of functional significance in the presence of an aged, normal pars distalis. The suggestion is made that the functional significance of the pharyngeal hypophysis may increase with age, particularly in the male.

A follow‐up review of at least three years was carried out on 80 patients diagnosed as suffering from attacks of acute pancreatitis. Thirty had associated cholelithiasis, 28 were alcoholics, and in 22 instances the pancreatitis was classified as idiopathic. It is clear that there is a widely varying response to continued alcoholism; one group will suffer only a single episode of acute pancreatitis, a few patients will develop acute relapsing pancreatitis, and a smaller number will progress to gross pancreatic destruction associated with persistent low‐grade pain, weight loss and endocrine insufficiency. In the group with gallstones, we were impressed by the association of stones with the recurrence of attacks, and in contrast the freedom from attacks endowed by a cholecystectomy or choledochotomy. In the idiopathic group, those patients aged over 50 years usually had one single attack without subsequent trouble; for patients aged below 50 years, the chances are highly in favour of further relapses. Eight cases of chronic relapsing pancreatitis are reviewed. It is re‐emphasized that at this stage of the disease the major duct is involved in multiple strictures and cannot be drained by terminal anastomosis. Experimental studies have been made of the effects of certain selected suture materials on the short‐term and long‐term healing of wounds in the lumbo‐dorsal aponeurosis of the rabbit. The results, subjected to statistical analysis, suggest that the polyester “Mersilene” produces stronger wounds than silicone‐proofed braided silk and chromicized catgut in the first two weeks of healing. From about six weeks to one year, stronger wounds are produced by the use of chromicized catgut sterilized by conventional methods than by its counterpart sterilised by60Co irradiation, and by silk or “Mersilene”. Protection of the spinal cord is the main concern in the management of injuries of the cervical part of the spine, and to enable this, early recognition of the unstable fracture or dislocation is essential. This paper consists of a review of 57 cases of fracture or dislocation of the cervical part of the spine at the Middlemore Hospital during the years 1947 to 1964 inclusive.
