Results of laparotomy staging of Hodgkin's disease are reported in a selected group of 14 patients with Stage 1 or Stage 2 disease, regarding whom a reasonable suspicion of intraabdominal involvement existed. Staging was advanced in 43% of patients, with consequent alteration in therapy.Intraabdominal Hodgkin's disease may be present focally in nodes and spleen which are not enlarged, and meticulous search for nodes is advocated with removal of perivascular fat if none can be located macroscopically. Examination of all tissue fresh and unfixed has given the best guide to the presence of disease foci, but multiple sections and careful search may be necessary to locate this occult disease. If intraabdominal Hodgkin's disease has not been located, subdiaphragmatic radiotherapy has not been given, but, in common with other reported series, the follow‐up period is as yet too short for full evaluation of this therapeutic concep

Adenoid cystic carcinoma is an uncommon tumour, which may present in many areas of the head and neck. An analysis is made of 30 cases presenting to the Head and Neck Clinic at St Vincent's Hospital, Sydney. The special characteristics of the pathology of this tumour and its life history are outlined. The clinical presentation and management of tumours in various sites are analysed. As a result of these experiences, recommendations in respect of diagnosis and treatment are made.

This report concerns 12 male patients who presented with digital ischcemia associated with blood hyperviscosity. The diagnosis of hyperviscosity was anticipated in eight cases by the presence of palpable peripheral pulses, but in four other patients with diabetes mellitus or atherosclerosis obliterans, hyperviscosity was an unexpected additional finding. A wide variety of conditions were identified as responsible for the blood hyperviscosity. Detection of the precise abnormality is important, since specific therapy may improve or correct both the condition and its related clinical manifestations. The prognosis of unrecognized hyperviscosity is poor, because of progression of the primary disease and associated ischemic complications. There is also an increased likelihood of morbidity following angiography or arterial reconstruction.

This paper studies the fate of the remaining kidney in 73 patients subjected to nephrectomy for renovascular hypertension. These patients have been followed from one to ten years, the average period being five years. In 42% the remaining kidney underwent functional and morphological hypertrophy; in 24% the kidney function remained unchanged; and in 34% chronic renal failure developed. The prognosis was found to be better with fibromuscular disease than with atheroma. The presence of mild to moderate arterial disease in the remaining kidney does not significantly affect its function.

Three hundred and one digital amputations have been reviewed. There was a high complication rate, including poor pad, neuroma, joint stiffness, nail remnant, osteomyelitis, retracted tendon stump and stiff shotdder. In 20% of patients a second operation, usually reamputation, was necessary because of neuroma or poor pad. Fifty per cent of patients were away from work for more than two months, and prolonged disability often followed when the amputation stump was covered by a skin graft or flap, because of impaired sensation. Reference is made to five digits which were reimplanted and subsequently amputated. It is recommended that when amputating through the digit, the surgeon should not aim at preserving length at all costs, but at covering the amputation stump with a satisfactory soft‐tissue pad and maintaining full finger functio
