The first 100 colonoscopies performed at the Royal Brisbane Hospital are reviewed. The indications for the examinations and the findings both on endoscopy and biopsy are discussed. Colonoscopy provides useful clinical information in more than half of the patients examined. It is of particular value in patients with doubtful radiological appearances, but of less help in elucidating the cause of lower gastrointestinal hæmorrhage

In a series of 118 patients postoperative acute renal failure was usually the result of a severe, but occult, surgical complication. Abdominal reexploration was often required. Postoperative hypotension, even without abdominal signs, commonly indicated an intraabdominal complication. Pancreatitis with abscess formation was a particularly serious complication. Peritoneal lavage was thought to have an important role in the management of diffuse intraabdominal sepsis.

A retrospective review of 26 cases of bronchial adenoma is presented, with an analysis of symptoms, X‐ray and bronchoscopic findings, surgical management, pathology aid postoperative course. Twenty‐two patients are known to be alive and well, with no clinical or radiological evidence of recurrence at review six months to 18 years after operation. Two patients are reported illustrating the early and late rectal complications of radiotherapy used in the treatment of carcinoma of the body of the uterus. The first developed a florid proctocolitis during a course of intracavitary and vaginal radiotherapy. This was followed by rectal stenosis requiring a one‐stage anterior resection. The second presented with a rectal stenosis and a vesicorectal fistula ten years after radiotherapy. She was treated by a two‐stage anterior resection, with an excision of the fistulous tract and repair of the bladder wall. The principles of the use of the limb tourniquet have been unchanged for over 100 years, but the details of the techniques involved have gradually altered. This paper describes the modern practice of the use of the limb tourniquet in Australia, estimates the incidence of complications and indicates the pressure which may be produced by the Esmarch bandage.

A review of 11 patients with 19 popliteal aneurysms is presented. Seven episodes of acute ischæmia due to thrombosis of the popliteal aneurysm necessitated major limb ampzitation in five patients, in spite of attempts to save the limb by sympathectonzy or vein‐bypass grafting. Conversely, in 11 limbs with asymptomatic aneurysms, large aneurysms causing pressure symptoms, or aneurysms with distal embolization, all aneurysms were reconstructed with a bypass graft.
