Every woman who lives long enough will become menopausal. While menopause is not a disease, the increased mortality and morbidity in menopausal women due to osteoporotic fractures, cardiovascular disease, and coronary heart disease are felt by many to be related to the decrease in endogenous estrogen. Therefore, one possible solution is estrogen replacement therapy. This article reviews recent literature on the complications of menopause and the risks and benefits of estrogen replacement therapy. The article also will discuss how a nurse practitioner can utilize the theory of care seeking behavior to implement this knowledge into practice.

A 30‐hour pharmacology course designed for master's of science in nursing nurse practitioner (NP) students was made available to community NPs as a continuing education (CE) offering to assist them in meeting new state requirements for prescribing authority. Fifty‐seven of 74 course graduates responded to a survey conducted 1 to 4 years after they completed the course. Responses showed that most NPs in clinical practice did initiate orders for drug therapy, although only 11 had obtained prescriptive authority. Current suicide statistics only represent a portion of suicides committed by the elderly. Indirect self‐destructive behaviors (ISDBs) cause many more deaths than direct methods yet they often are ignored, misinterpreted, or unidentified. Medical noncompliance is identified as a form of ISDB, leading to diminished quality of life and an expedited death. While noncompliance occurs for a variety of reasons, it is a form of self‐destruction for a portion of the elderly population. Nurse practitioners' unique contributions to primary care can be demonstrated more clearly if clinicians would adhere to a theoretical framework that reflects their combined nursing and medical role.
