Laryngotracheobronchitis (LTB), also known as “croup,” is a perennial viral infection that commonly affects young children in the cold season of the year. Croup, with its distinguishable symptoms of “barking seal cough,” inspiratory stridor, and late‐night occurrence, can be frightening for child and parents but can be managed effectively at home. This article outlines the nurse practitioner's (NP) instructions for LTB home management, triage of symptoms, and anticipatory guidance regarding course of the illness. A psychometric model for the construction of examinations (the test construction process) is adapted as a conceptual framework for curriculum design. The outcome of the process, the curriculum blueprint, is proposed as particularly advantageous for nurse practitioner education, which is somewhat unique among nursing specialties in its need to accommodate the competing demands of several regulatory or educational approval bodies that influence the content of its curriculum. The curriculum blueprint provides a visual dimension and therefore is useful as a communication tool. An excerpted example of a curriculum blueprint is offered.

The recurrence of symptoms many years after the rehabilitation of individuals who survived the acute illness, poliomyelitis, is a major concern. The purpose of this article is to provide information to the nurse practitioner (NP), who, as a primary health care provider, may be the first health professional to encounter persons with such complaints. In 1990 we celebrated the 25th anniversary of the nurse practitioner (NP) movement. We now have had considerable experience with the role, and it is appropriate to examine our contributions to the maturity of nursing as a profession. Nursing's future health care delivery role in an increasingly competitive health care arena may well depend on the autonomy of the practice of professional nursing. This article focuses on NPs, their autonomy, and their contributions to the professionalization of nursing.

This naturalistic study identifies and describes strategies for clinical problem solving in situations of uncertainty, from observations of patient/family visits in a family health center. Pharmacologic care of the elderly is a multifaceted problem. This article approaches geropharmacology from an individualized perspective. The practitioner should plan and prescribe health care for the aged, with a knowledge of physiologic changes in the elderly, an understanding of the pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic mechanisms of iatrogenic drug reactions, and an awareness of the social and ethical issues related to geropharmacology.
