摘要:
SUMMARYThermophilic and thermotolerant fungi were isolated from samples of domestic and municipal compost piles, self-heated industrial wood chip piles, alligator nests, sun-heated plant debris and soil, tree bark piles, sun-heated herbivore dung, steam line discharge sites, self-heated coal waste piles, an incubator bird nest, geothermal soils, and hot springs using lignin-containing enrichment media. The lignin added was Indulin AT (Westvaco), which is a Kraft lignin. The lignin-degrading ability of these isolates and of other thermophilic and thermotolerant fungi was assayed using clearing of lignin in agar, change in dry weight of liquid cultures containing lignin, and absorbance of culture filtrates at 280 and 460 nm in 1 N NaOH. None of the fungi tested cleared lignin. None of the isolates caused more than 9% loss of dry weight when grown on lignin in liquid culture. Decrease in absorption of culture filtrates at 280 and 460 nm accompanied increase in dry weight in a lignin-containing medium. Major changes in absorbance were observed in a different lignin-containing medium, but the changes were not consistent with changes in dry weight. Data are presented for growth at 37 C and SO C and for 14 da and 60 da.

摘要:
SUMMARYThe seasonal occurrence and distribution of filamentous fungi on the aerial parts of salt marsh cordgrass,Spartina alterniflora, along a Rhode Island estuary were studied over a 26-mon period. Fungal fruiting bodies were observed on freshly collected standing plants and their frequency varied with the season. Frequency patterns were similar over the two growth-death cycles studied and indicate there may be a characteristic mycota associated withS. alterniflora. The AscomycetesBuergenerula spartinaeandPhaeosphaeria typharumwere found to invade early during the growing season and the DeuteromycetesAlternaria alternata, Epicoccum nigrum, andStagonosporasp. reached their highest frequencies at the time of seed production. Species ofLeptosphaeriaandPleosporawere found primarily on dead standing culms. A combination of both marine and terrestrial fungi can be observed on S.alterniflora, with the marine species occurring on the lower portion of standing plants. The number of observations of fungal species/plant was the greatest at the time of seed production, senescence, and death (September-January). The mycota at the three sampling stations, which differed in salinity, was similar and, in general, the fungi which occurred at the highest frequencies were found at all the sampling stations.

摘要:
SUMMARYSixty-four isolates ofChaetomiumwere grown under defined conditions, and their growth over a range of temperatures was noted. Five temperature groups were designated: mesophiles, transitional mesophiles, microthermophiles, thermotolerants, and thermophiles. Growth rates of species from each temperature group were compared and the maximum growth rates of thermophiles were found significantly greater than those of the nonthermophiles. Growth temperature data were used to support other salient features of the genus in establishing the synonymy ofC. verrucichaetawithC. abuenseandC. virginicumwithC. thermophilevar.coprophile.Growth-temperature data also support the synonomy ofC. erraticumwithC. gracile.

摘要:
SUMMARYCronartium fusiformeis considered conspecific withC. quercuumbased on morphological studies, but maintained as a distinctforma specialisofC. quercuumbecause of its restricted host range onPinus taedaandP. elliottii.Three other special forms ofC. quercuumare proposed for physiological entities that selectively attackP. banksiana, P. echinata, orP. Virginiana. The importance of recognizing the conspecificity and genetic plasticity of these organisms when breeding resistant pines is emphasized.

摘要:
SUMMARYAspergillus fumigatuswas one of the commonest fungi isolated from self-heated wood chips and bark waste incubated at 37 C and 50 C. Other fungi includedAbsidiaspp.,Chaetomium thermophilevar.dissitum, Rhizopusspp.,Thermoascus crustaceusandTrichoderma koningii. Thermomyces lanuginosuswas isolated from bark, and the yeastKluyvero- myces cicerisporusfrom wood chips.Aspergillus fumigatus, strain FW35, produced CM-cellulase, xylanase, 1,3-β-glucanase and amylase during growth in shake-flask culture with beech, oak and Norway spruce sawdust as carbon source. The one percent alkali solubility of sawdust decreased slightly during this growth (significantly in oak), indicating limited utilization of alkali-soluble hemicelluloses rather than extensive depolymerization of cellulose. Incubation of sawdust with culture filtrates resulted in significant weight losses in beech and oak sawdust, and there were also significant weight losses in beech and Norway spruce wood shavings incubated in plate cultures.
