摘要:
ABSTRACTPopulations ofFlammulina velutipesadapted to drier environments produce basidiocarps that emerge from their substrate with pilei and stipes 24% broader and pilei 19% thicker than the basidiocarps of populations of the same species adapted to wetter environments. The dry-tolerant isolates had more surface area exposed to evaporative loss, a higher percentage of water in their tissues, and a larger initial water allocation. Both wet-specialist and dry-tolerant population isolates are genetically programmed for large ultimate size under saturated water conditions; however, under water stress conditions, expanding and thickening the pileus too late reduces spore production fivefold for the wet-specialist populations.

摘要:
ABSTRACTMarasmius inaquosi sp. nov.was isolated from palo verde wood collected inside a woodrat midden in the Arizona Sonoran Desert and is described from basidiomata formed in vitro. The species belongs in sect.Sicci, has an amphithallic mating system, and is the only knownMarasmiusfrom desert environments. Woodrat middens are mesic microhabitats favorable for fungal growth in an otherwise xeric environment. Woodrats may play a role in dispersingM. inaquosito suitable microhabitats. The species is illustrated and compared with phenetically similar taxa, and details on culture morphology are provided.

摘要:
ABSTRACTThe morphology and development ofByssothecium flumineum, a new loculoascomycete in the Dacampiaceae from submerged wood, was studied. This species is characterized by medium-sized, ovoid to obpyriform ascomata with a relatively wide peridium. Hamathecium consists of gel-coated cellular pseudoparaphyses interspersed among abundant basal and slightly lateral asci. Ascospores are 3-septate, brown with slightly lighter end cells and verruculose.Byssothecium flumineumoccurs frequently on woody debris in midwestern streams and decomposes wood by soft rot activity.

摘要:
ABSTRACTCultures ofLeptosphaerulina crassiascafrom single ascospores formed ascostromata, indicating that the fungus is homothallic. Mycelial hyphae were septate, with uninucleate cells, and they gave rise to fertile hyphae which were larger and had binucleate or multinucleate cells. Certain cells of the fertile hyphae divided repeatedly in all planes to form ascostromal initials. Small binucleate ascogonial cells with dense cytoplasm soon filled the central part of the young ascostroma; later they give rise to ascogenous cells that developed directly into asci. No sterile centrum tissues were formed. The asci contained eight ascospores which were initially uninucleate. Mature ascospores were multinucleate and had 3–5 transverse septa and 0–2 longitudinal septa. The ascus wall was two-layered, with the inner layer (endotunica) extending through the outer layer (ectotunica) during ascospore discharge. The ascoma is a uniloculate pseudothecium with a papillate ostiolar neck and bitunicate asci. Ascomal ontogeny is typical of theDothideatype of development.
