O. Const,comb. nov.(syn.Peronospora borreriaeLagerh.;Plasmopara cruseaeShaw&Safeeulla) parasitic on various Rubiaceae in Central and South America, is described and illustrated.

ABSTRACTIn fruitbodies ofFlammulina velutipesgrowing on nutrient-supplemented sawdust the pilei were replaced on whole stipes and pilei with stipe apices (2 mm) were grafted in various ways to subapical stipe portions at the beginning of rapid elongation. Hyphal regeneration and fusion occurred in 84–100% of the grafts attempted but stipes and pilei resumed growth in only 28–94%. In whole stipes with replaced pilei elongation almost equalled that of intact fruitbodies, while pileus expansion virtually ceased for two days before resuming. In all other successful grafts rapid growth of both stipe apex and pileus resumed after a delay of 2–3 days, while all stipe portions below the top graft union stopped growing early as did unsuccessful grafts and controls without pilei. Pilei and stipe apices grafted on inverted stipe segments to the base grew as much as with normally oriented ones. Killed segments stopped all apical growth. No primordia regenerated on grafted specimens.The effects of the various grafts are explainable in terms of acropetal transport of mycelial metabolites through living hyphae under the influence of the pilei. Results are also discussed in relation to the control of stipe elongation by the lamellae.

ABSTRACTFluorescent cyclic decapeptides, the so-called cortinarins, have been claimed to cause, or at least contribute to, the nephrotoxicity of the mushroomCortinarius speciosissima.As the structural elucidation of the cortinarins described in the literature is doubtful, the proposed structures must be disputed. In addition, the present study demonstrates that, on analysis of the fluorescent zones exhibiting the chromatographic behavior described for the cortinarins, only steroids are detectable. Our analytical results indicate that the fluorescence characteristic forCortinarius speciosissimaextracts is mainly due to ergosta-4,6,8(14),22-tetraen-3-one. Furthermore, we did not find any substances referable to cortinarins in extracts of mushrooms originating from different locations or collected in different years. Orelline, a photoproduct of the nephrotoxin orellanine contributes to the fluorescence but shows completely different chromatographic behavior.

ABSTRACTCatatrama, a new genus in the Tricholomataceae, is described from Costa Rica. Its taxonomic position and its similarity to other genera are discussed. The combination of echinulate, cyanophilic and inamyloid basidiospores, subfree lamellae, and bilateral hymenophoral trama characterize this new genus and species.
