SUMMARYNycteribiidae (Diptera) are ectoparasites of bats in the Old and New World. Some Old World nycteribiids are hosts forArthrorhynchus(Laboulbeniomycetes). Thirty-five additional collections ofA. nycteribiaeandA. eucampsipodaegreatly extend the known host and distributional range of these two species. In addition, it has been found that although morphological similarity exists within fungal thalli of the same collection, both species are marked by a great degree of intraspecific variation which usually cannot be correlated with climate, geographical location, host species, host sex, or other factors. It is suggested that low population densities and partial isolation of populations may contribute to intra-specific variation.

SUMMARYImmature stages of thalli ofArthrorhynchus nycteribiaeandA. eucampsipodaeundergo a developmental sequence similar to that of other species of Laboulbeniomycetes included in the Stigmatomyceteae.Arthrorhynchus nycteribiaecan be distinguished most readily fromA. eucampsipodaeandA. cyclopodiaeby the long upper cell of the receptacle and the thin-walled, short stalk of the antheridial appendage.

SUMMARYIsolations were made from blighted pigeon-pea (Cajanus cajan) plants from different locations in India. A species ofphytophthorawas consistently obtained from these locations and was proved to be the causal organism involved in the disease. Based on the sporangium shape and size, oogonium and oospore formation, temperature requirements, and pathogenicity tests, we have classified these isolates asP. drechslerif. sp.cajani.The use of formae speciales was considered appropriate because of the specificity of these isolates to pigeon pea andAtylosiaspp., wild relatives of the pigeon pea.

SUMMARYConsiderable variation occurred in the cellulolytic activities of various isolates ofPyrieularia oryzae.Reducing sugars accumulated in media containing filter paper and carboxymethyl cellulose. A direct relationship between the amount of reducing sugars and the percentage weight loss of filter paper was not observed. Greater breakdown of filter-paper cellulose occurred in the presence of potassium nitrate than in the presence of glycine or ammonium chloride and cellulolytic activity increased when the nitrogen level in the medium was raised. Glucose suppressed cellulolytic activity.
