SUMMARYStemphylium solanipreconidiophores respond by subsequent pigmentation and conidia production to treatment with certain solvents and carriers alone or with added ergosterol. Treatment consisted of flooding 7-day-old cultures grown in the dark at 21 C on V-8 juice 1.5% agar with 4 ml of solution so that preconidiophores are wetted or soaked for 24 hr prior to deflooding and dark incubation for another 24 hr. Conidia were induced to form by 1–10% DMSO in 0.1 M KH2PO4and by 2% ethanol. Ergosterol added to carriers or solvents increased conidial formation 2- to 5-fold over that in controls. The morphology and pigmentation of conidiophores and conidia were similar to those produced by ultraviolet radiation at appropriate doses. A possible explanation is that free ergosterol is involved in the conidial formation inS. solani.

SUMMARYStrains of 13 species of fungi isolated in relatively large numbers from sewage sludges, polluted waters, organically enriched soils and similar habitats were incubated under 100% prepurified nitrogen gas in liquid culture with the reductant sodium formaldehyde sulfoxylate. Incubation was carried out in 25-ml conical flasks in Case“anaero”jars. Growth and removal of carbon from the medium were measured at weekly intervals by oven dry weight determinations on cell crops collected on membrane filters, and with a Beckman carbon analyzer. Except forGeotrichum candidum, Fusarium oxysporumandF. solani, all strains used demonstrated a definite requirement for vitamins under the anaerobic or microaerophilic conditions of the test. Greatest amount of growth activity was demonstrated byGeotrichum candidum, Fusarium oxysporum, F. solaniandMucor hiemalis.The fungi most sensitive to a 100% nitrogen gas atmosphere werePhoma herbarum, Rhodotorula mucilaginosaandCandida parapsilosis.Intermediate species included:Aspergillus niger, A. fumigatus, Aureobasidium pullulans, Phialophora jeanselmei, Penicillium oxalicumandP. brevi-compactum(used in combination), andTrichoderma viride, in descending order. It was shown that strains of those fungi tested are able to metabolize organic substances and produce cell tissue under the conditions of the experiment and that therefore they may be carrying out similar activities in microaerophilic or even anaerobic conditions in sewage treatment systems and similar habitats.

SUMMARYThe ultrastructure of mitosis in the zoosporangia of the water moldCatenaria anguillulaehas been studied. The nuclear divisions prior to the formation of zoospores are mitotic. Centrioles are associated with but not connected to the spindle which is intranuclear. The nuclear membrane persists throughout the division process.It is suggested that anaphase separation of the daughter chromosomes is accomplished by the elongation of spindle tubules of the interzonal region. Telophase is marked by the rounding up of the daughter nuclei with the exclusion from the nucleus of a central, spindle-shaped structure which is then apparently broken down.

SUMMARYCaulocystidia and pileocystidia are used for the first time in the genusXeromphalinaKühn&Maire in combination with morphological and chemical characters to delimit subgenic taxa. Three sections (one new) and four subsections (one new) accommodate the 12 species and varieties described for Europe and North America. A new species and a new variety are described from western United States. Additional ecological information and extended ranges of many of the taxa are reported. Keys to all taxa are provided along with illustrations of important structures and pictures of 3 species.
