SUMMARYReports in the literature indicate that corn at the time of harvest typically is infected (55–92% of the kernels) with a variety of fungi. This study was initiated to determine the time, kind, and progressions of natural fungal infection of corn in the field. During the 1974 growing season, a central Illinois cornfield was sampled weekly (15 wk) from the emergence of silks until harvest. Weather data were recorded. At each sampling, 10 ears were hand picked and brought into the laboratory, where silks, and kernels from tip, middle, and butt of each ear were aseptically removed and plated on yeast extract agar containing tetracycline. After incubation at 28 C for 4–7 da, the fungi growing from the silks and kernels were identified. Fusaria were identified the third week and had a peak occurrence in the eighth week. Yeasts followed the same trend. Overall, Fusaria were by far the most abundant molds infecting the corn kernels.Acremonium strictumwas identified the sixth week, whereasNigrosporasp. was not observed until the eighth week. Both progressively increased to harvest. Species ofAlternariaandPenicilliumwere sporadic and found at low levels. NoAspergillusspecies were encountered. Generally, maturing corn was relatively free of fungal contamination until the late dent stage.

SUMMARYA variety of yeast-like fungi representing the generaCandida, Cryptococcus, Rhodotorula, Torulopsis, andTrichosporonwas inhibited in vitro in the presence of an aqueous extract of garlic. Fungi associated with vaginitis were inhibited and killed by an aqueous garlic extract diluted to1: 1024 when incubated at 37 C. The antimycotic activity of the garlic preparation appeared greater at 37 C than at 30 C. The aqueous garlic extract maintained its fungistatic properties at 4,–10,–60 C for the test period of 30 da, but decreased in fungicidal ability within one wk at the same storage temperatures. Twenty-two isolates ofC. albicansisolated from active vaginitis cases were all inhibited by the garlic extract.

SUMMARYLong wave ultraviolet light, peaking at 366 nm, inhibits pycnidium development. The extent of this inhibition is related to: (1) the duration of the ultraviolet light exposure, (2) the intensity of ultraviolet light, (3) the carbohydrate in the substrate, and (4) the concentration of the carbohydrate. At low concentration of the carbohydrate (0.6 g C/liter) inhibition occurred on all the substrates within 15 min. Longer light exposures, up to 40 min, were required to inhibit pycnidia at the high carbohydrate level (6.0 g C/liter). When the ultraviolet light intensity was increased from 100μW/cm2to 320μW/cm2, shorter exposures inhibited pycnidium formation. Identical dosages of ultraviolet light inhibited pycnidium formation on some substrates but not on others. When cultures were irradiated, inhibition occurred readily on maltose media at both concentrations. Inhibition on other substrates and substrate concentrations generally required exposures of a longer duration.

SUMMARYThe genusOphionectriahas been included in both the Euascomycetes and Loculoascomycetes. Critical study of the type species,Ophionectria trichospora, reveals it to have unitunicate asci, a hypocreaceous centrum and bright-colored perithecia. The genus, therefore, belongs in the euascomycete order Hypocreales. All available type specimens of species which have been placed inOphionectriawere examined. Only the type species remains in the genus. All others are excluded. In this paper the monotypic genusOphionectriais described and figured; excluded species are discussed briefly. One new species is described:Barya byssicola.Two new names are proposed:Calonectria bryophilaandLasiosphaeria glabra.Seven new combinations are proposed:Calonectria hendrickxii, C. vernoniae, Torrubiella lloydii, Lasiosphaeria rufula, Podonectria coccorum, P. larvaesporaandTubeufia paludosa.
