摘要:
SUMMARYSterigma and basidiospore development inCoprinus cinereusandBoletus rubinellushave been examined using an optical brightener and fluorescence microscopy. Development of the ellipsoid basidiospores ofC. cinereuswas associated with a characteristic series of fluorescence patterns: general, asymmetric, apical and finally subapical fluorescence. In the elongate spores ofB. rubinellus, after the initial asymmetric growth phase, fluorescence was consistently apical until the spore matured. Stage-specific fluorescence patterns were correlated with the changes in spore shape. Their significance is discussed.

摘要:
SUMMARYA mating study performed by crossing 334 Japanese isolates ofTrichophyton mentagrophyteswith“+”and“-”tester strains ofArthroderma simii, A. benhamiaeandA. vanbreuseghemiirevealed thatT. mentagrophytesin Japan was a complex composed of the conidial states ofA. vanbreuseghemiiand the other asexual strains corresponding toT. interdigitaleand a small number of thegranulosum-asteroidesform of which mating type was indeterminate. None of the isolates mated successfully withA. simiiandA. benhamiae.Forty-nine isolates which successfully mated withA. vanbreuseghemiiwere further subclassified into 39 of thegranulosum-asteroidesform, three of the“powdery”form and seven of the“persicolor”form on the basis of the morphological differences in culture. The former one form was zoophilic in nature, while the latter two appeared anthropophilic in nature. These three forms differed from each other in their sexual reactivity. Thegranulosum-asteroidesform consisted of“+”(80%) and“-”(20%) mating types, while the“powdery”form, the“persicolor”form andT. interdigitalewere all of the“+”mating type. Differences in geographic distribution between“+”and“-”mating types were also elucidated for an epidemiological approach to this species complex.

摘要:
SUMMARYXanthoria polycarpadischarged ascospores in the fall, winter, and spring. Discharge in the summer was infrequent. Spore discharge was correlated with rainfall. In the laboratory ascospores were discharged from 1 to 24 mm away from apothecia, and commonly occurred in groups of eight. Spore discharge occurred at 5, 10, 15, and 20 C. No discharge occurred at 25 or 30 C. Spores were discharged when apothecia were placed on moist filter paper or in an atmosphere of 100% RH. No discharge occurred at relative humidities less than 100%. More than 90% of ascospores incubated on water agar at 15 C germinated within 3 da. The highest percentage of spores germinated on plates incubated at 10, 15, and 20 C. Germination also occurred at 5 and 25 C, but not at 30 C. Spore germination was optimum atpH 5, 6, and 7. Spore germination on water agar and on lichen-extract agar was greater than germination on malt-yeast-extract agar or bark-extract agar.

摘要:
SUMMARYPhytophthora insolita, a new species with unusual sex organs, was isolated from soil in Taiwan. The fungus produces oogonia but no discrete antheridia. Sporangia are noncaducous, ovoid, and without distinct apical papillae. Differentiation of zoospores precedes their release from sporangia. Hyphal swellings are variable in shape and size, and chlamydospores are thin walled and terminal. The fungus grew 8.4 and 4.0 mm/da at 35 and 38 C, respectively, and was not sensitive to 3-hydroxy-5-methylisoxazole. It was capable of inducing oospore formation of A2, but not A1mating type ofPhytophthora parasitica.

摘要:
SUMMARYHaptoglossa mirabilisis described as a new endoparasitic oomycete attackingAdinetarotifers. A solitary infection produces a large, cylindrical thallus with rounded ends. At maturity each thallus functions as a zoosporangium producing one or several evacuation tubes through which laterally biflagellate zoospores escape. Zoospores encyst after a swarming period. Each encysted zoospore then germinates to produce a remarkable hypodermic-like infection cell. Using this cell, the fungus attacks rotifers by rapid injection of a walled, cylindrical sporidium which enlarges to become the thallus.

摘要:
SUMMARYCollections ofUredo iyoensiswere found to have two kinds of urediniospores (elliptic and mucronate spores). These two kinds of spores are similar in morphology and size to the two kinds of spores reported forU. alpestris.Scanning-electron-microscopic observations showed that the walls of the elliptic spores bear dense warts or ridges in more or less longitudinal lines, and those of the mucronate spores are minutely and sparsely punctate. These two kinds of spores never occur together in the same sorus. This indicates that the two spore forms represent two distinct taxa.Viola blandaeformis, V. selkirkii, V. rossi, andV. kusanoanaare newly added to the host plants forU. iyoensis.

摘要:
SUMMARYScanning-electron microscopy was used to follow pathogenesis bySclerotinia minorand S.sclerotiorumin bean tissue. The process of disease development included formation of infection cushions, mechanical penetration of the host cuticle, development of infection hyphae intercellularly beneath the cuticle and within the host cortex, inter- and intracellular development of ramifying hyphae that differed in size and appearance from infection hyphae, emergence of hyphae through host stomata, and formation of sclerotia on the host surface.
