摘要:
SUMMARYThe species ofExidiopsisknown to the authors from the U.S.S.R. are noted. Those species not previously studied in detail are described and illustrated. The genusExidiopsisis emended to exclude the type and closely related species ofEichleriella. Exidiopsis candida, previously known only from tropical and subtropical regions, is shown to occur on Sakhalin Island.Exidiopsis effusa, on angiosperm wood, is reported from eastern Siberia and European U.S.S.R.Exidiopsis grisea, on gymnosperm wood, was identified from several sites in the Transcaucasia. A previously undescribed species,E. gypsea, is shown to occur in the Crimean Peninsula, Transcausasia, and Estonian S.S.R.Exidiopsis calceais reported from throughout the U.S.S.R. and apparently occurs on both angiosperm and gymnosperm wood. It is the most frequently collected and widely distributed species ofExidiopsisin the U.S.S.R. Additional collections ofE. griseobrunneaare noted from Siberia, and a new subspecies,E. griseobrunneasubsp.macrogyna, is described. Both subspecies ofE. griseobrunneaare apparently only able to utilize species ofDuschekiaas a substrate. Additional collections ofE. laccataandE. pallida, which have been previously reported from the U.S.S.R. were not noted.

摘要:
SUMMARYSyncephalis sphaerica(PiptocephaUdaceae, Mucorales) is a biotrophic, haustorial mycoparasite. Fifty genera of fungi, representing four classes, were tested as potential hosts for the parasite. Twenty genera of Mucorales supported growth and sporulation ofS. sphaerica.A single ascomycete (a yeast) and two members of the Deuteromycetes were also parasitized byS. sphaerica.None of the Basidiomycetes tested supported growth of the parasite.Axenic culture ofS. sphaericawas partially successful, with dense mycelial growth and some sporulation on certain media. The use of certain filtrates with host exudates as well as the use of killed mycelium to support growth was unsuccessful. The host range and axenic culture ofS. sphaericaare compared toS. californicaand species ofPiptocephalis.

摘要:
SUMMARYThe genusGuttulinopsisof E. W. Olive is briefly reviewed and the common coprophilous speciesG. vulgarisis considered with regard to its distinguishing characteristics, the development of its fructifications (sorocarps) and its cultivation in the laboratory upon sterile dung partially embedded in low-nutrient agar. More detailed attention is given to the new speciesG. niveathat differs from the older species in important particulars: it produces sorocarps with well defined cellular stalks (sorophores) of a characteristic tapered pattern; it bears globose to subglobose spore heads (sori) that are consistently snow white when young, becoming lightly pigmented with age; and it can be cultivated quite successfully in two-membered cultures with eitherKlebsiella pneumoniaeorEscherichia coliupon relatively weak glucose-peptone agar buffered to slightly acid pH. The myxamoebae ofG. nivea, like those ofG. vulgarishave lobose pseudopodia, nuclei (usually single) with centrally positioned nucleoli, usually single contractile vacuoles, and spores that often show prominent crescent-shaped vacuolation situated just inside the spore wall. Cell aggregation inG. nivealeading to sorocarp formation, as inG. vulgaris, occurs without stream formation, the converging myxamoebae responding individually to some chemotactic attractant of unknown nature.

摘要:
SUMMARYThe sporangiospores ofMucor bacilliformis(NRRL 2346) were compared to those ofMucor fragilis(ATCC 10777),Mucor hiemalis(ATCC 1205),Mucor mucedo(ATCC 7941),Mucor racemosus(ATCC 1216a) andMucor rouxii(NRRL 1894) with respect to number of nuclei, weight, amount of DNA, RNA and protein and rate of germination. They were found to be mostly uninucleate like those of the other five organisms. They have, however, a much smaller weight and contain significantly less DNA, RNA and protein. The relative proportions of these macromolecules are also characteristically different forM. bacilliformis. The ratio of RNA to DNA is about two, whereas for the otherMucorspecies it varies from eight to thirteen. These results suggest that the sporangiospores ofM. bacilliformisare deficient in RNA.
