摘要:
ABSTRACTA fourth species of the Australasian genusAustrosmittium, A. biforme(Trichomycetes, Harpellales), has been found. This gut fungus from Chironomidae larvae collected in a Tasmanian stream has the unusual feature of producing two distinctly different sizes of trichospores. Two new Tasmanian species of the more common genusSmittium, S. compactumandS. fastigatum, are described from lotic chironomid larvae. A new species of Harpellales from Tasmanian mayfly nymphs is also described and illustrated, but not named; it may represent a new genus that has similarities toBojamyces repensrecently described from the USA. New records of other Tasmanian trichomycetes from aquatic insects are provided.

摘要:
ABSTRACTThree species ofSmittium(Trichomycetes, Harpellales) that may be endemic to Western Australia are described from the hindguts of midge larvae (Diptera, Chironomidae):S. fruticosum, S. angustumandS. microsporum.Axenic cultures were obtained of the latter two fungal species. The occurrence in Western Australia of six geographically widespread species of other Harpellales from dipteran guts is reported together with records ofParamoebidiumspp. (Amoebidiales) in Chironomidae and Ephemeroptera.

摘要:
ABSTRACTTwenty-three caves in West Virginia were investigated for the presence of dictyostelid cellular slime molds. Nine species were recovered, but only three of these (Dictyostelium sphaerocephalum, D. mucoroides, andD. rosarium) were recorded from at least 10 different caves. In general, the distribution of cellular slime molds in caves appears to be rather patchy, but in the microsites where they do occur, these organisms exhibit surprisingly high levels of abundance and diversity. The presence ofD. rosariumin West Virginia caves was unexpected, since this species has not yet been recorded from aboveground sites in the state. Previous reports of the occurrence and distribution ofD. rosariumindicate that the species is most commonly associated with moderately dry or saline soils in arid habitats. However, the results of the present study suggest thatD. rosariumis also able to exploit cave habitats to a greater extent than most other cellular slime mold species.

摘要:
ABSTRACTThe sexual incompatibility system ofBjerkandera fumosawas determined to be unifactorial and not bifactorial as previously reported. Mon-mon and di-mon confrontations among and between North American and European isolates proved to be compatible. A revised cultural description ofB. fumosais provided.

摘要:
ABSTRACTFour new species ofRhodocybeare described from South America. The atypical presence of small sized siderophilous bodies in the basidia of members ofRhodocybeis discussed, since three of the new species exhibit this character. Notes onRhodocybe angustisporaare also presented. A revised key to species ofRhodocybein South America is provided.

摘要:
ABSTRACTThe condition and incidence of vesicular-arbuscular mycorrhizae ofAcer saccharum(sugar maple) in a natural hardwood forest in the Lower Laurentians of Quebec was examined. The effects of forest fertilization on the mycorrhizae were also studied. Microscopic examination revealed VAM structures which included hyphal coils, vesicles, and arbuscules. Vesicles and hyphal coils were the most frequently observed structures, whereas arbuscules were rarely seen. Seasonal differences in the incidence of vesicular-arbuscular mycorrhizae were observed but these differences were not consistent from year to year. Generally, infection rates were lowest in mid-summer. Fertilization of forest soil with a base cation mixture did not appear to affect either the condition or the incidence of VAM.

摘要:
ABSTRACTField research was conducted in central England on grasses infected byEpichloëtyphina. Both asymptomatic and stromata-producing infections were encountered and examined. Isolations of endophytes were made and comparative laboratory studies conducted on sugar utilization capacities, starch and protein hydrolysis capacities, and cultural morphologies. The presence of distinct varieties ofAcremonium typhinumis proposed to account for variation in ecology, physiology, and morphology of isolates.

摘要:
ABSTRACTChytriomyces angularisgrows on pollen and heat-treatedOedogoniumbaits. Zoosporangia are gibbose, operculate, and lack vesicular discharge. The main rhizoid is thread-like. The zoospore has a core of ribosomes delimited by endoplasmic reticulum, a nonfunctional centriole that is parallel to the kinetosome and connected to it by fibrils, and a microbody appressed to a single lipid globule. It lacks a rumposome, microtubule root, striated inclusion, and plates associated with the kinetosome, features that occur in the type species. Thus, the description ofChytriomycesencompasses species that are not closely related.

摘要:
ABSTRACTGrain samples of sorghum were collected from Nigeria, Lesotho, and Zimbabwe from grain sold in markets, left unharvested in the field, and stored in home storage units. The most prevalentFusariumspecies isolated wasF. moniliformewhich accounted for 65.2% of the totalFusariumspecies recovered. Other species isolated wereF. equiseti(8.9%),F. semitectum(8.4%),F. nygamai(7.5%),F. chlamydosporum(4.5%), andF. graminearum(3.7%). Other species isolated infrequently wereF. compactum, F. solani, F. proliferatum, F. dimerum, F. avenaceum, F. sporotrichioides, F. lateritium, F. sambucinum, F. napiforme, F. oxysporum, andF. subglutinans, these species accounting for 1.8% of those recovered.Fusarium moniliforme, F. equiseti, F. nygamai, andF. semitectumwere recovered from samples from all three countries.Fusarium graminearumwas recovered from samples from Nigeria and Zimbabwe but not from samples from Lesotho.Fusarium moniliformeandF. nygamaiare known to produce fumonisins, some of which are carcinogenic. The recovery of isolates ofF. sporotrichioidesfrom a sample from Nigeria was unexpected since this species is usually found only in temperate to cold regions.

摘要:
ABSTRACTEven though spores ofAscobolus immersusare much larger than those of any other species of the genus, ascosporogenesis in this species is basically identical to that of other species ofAscobolus. The spinelike precursors of the epispore layer are connected laterally into numerous periclinal lines. A dark band is formed above the layers of epispore and leaves a translucent zone separating the epispore from the matrix of the perisporic sac. The appearance of a translucent zone causes a fragile“exospure”similar to that found consistently in many coprophilous and pyrophilic discomycetes. Globular opaque bodies of epiplasmic origin and surrounded by amorphous electron dense granules are found in the perisporic sac and appear to be involved in ornament formation. Perisporic sac vacuoles that influence spore ornamentation inA. immersusare contrasted with those of other species ofAscobolus.
