摘要:
SUMMARYReports in the literature indicate that white light inhibits aflatoxin production. We studied the effect of continuous white light on the production of aflatoxins and several anthraquinone pigments by wild type and mutant strains of two species ofAspergillusgrown in a liquid defined medium. No light inhibition of these secondary metabolites was observed. However, continuous white light did inhibit the formation of sclerotia in 10 of 13 strains cultured on potato dextrose agar. An action spectrum was obtained for four strains, indicating that wavelengths in the blue-green region were effective in the inhibition of Sclerotium formation. Since the sclerotia of aflatoxigenic fungi contain a potent tremorgen, dark-grown cultures of these molds may present a double toxigenic threat.

摘要:
SUMMARYA defined basal medium for the production of essential oils byC. variosporawas devised. The effect of different nitrogen sources on odor production and quality was studied. Carbohydrate and nitrogen utilization were followed and finally the production of the essential oil ofC. variosporaas a function of time was analyzed.

摘要:
SUMMARYA new species of Entomophthorales,Ballocephala pedicellata, is reported from tardigrades (Hypsibius dujardiniandDiphascon pinguis)living in moss. The new species is closely related toB. sphaerosporabut possesses conidia clustered near the conidiophore tip rather than along its length. A key to the entomophthoraceous parasites of nematodes and tardigrades is given.

摘要:
SUMMARYTwo chytridiaceous fungi were found in the neuston of a Florida lake. Both parasitized living pine pollen grains dropped in the water.Phlyctochytrium macrosporumwas characterized by having apophysate sporangia bearing one or more hemispherical protrusions, empty at maturity, and a small number of large (10–15 yum in diam) zoospores.Sporophlyctidium neustonicumforms in its epibiotic or stalked sporangia, spherical aplanospores which after discharge produce long straight setae, one of which makes contact with a pollen grain and enters it. The attached aplanospore then enlarges into a sporangium. Resting spores were also found but their germination was not seen. No sexuality appeared to be present.

摘要:
SUMMARYOne hundred and eighty-three species of mycophilic fungi have been isolated from nature and studied for their fundamental parasitic properties. Examination was in paired culture with the host both in vitro and in vivo. The suggestion is made that mycophilic fungi be divided into six physiological groups: biotrophics, facultative necrotrophics, facultative biotrophics, necrotrophics, semisaprophytic mycophilics, and saprophytic associates.

摘要:
SUMMARYThe growth behavior ofChaetomium cellulolyticumin cellulose medium indicated that long fibers of cellulose (Solka-Floc S.W. 40) are broken into shorter ones during the early phases of fermentation followed by longitudinal splitting of short fibers into fibrils and ultimately almost complete utilization of the substrate.Chaetomium cellulolyticumwas found to be a fast-growing organism on 1% cellulose with a protein synthesis rate of 0.09 h-1. The rate of protein synthesis increased more than threefold (0.3 h-1) when 1% more substrate was added immediately after the complete conversion of the first batch of substrate. The growth behavior ofC. cellulolyticumon cellulose indicated that it might be the most suitable organism for cyclic-batch or continuous fermentation of cellulose for microbial protein production. NaOH utilization, to keep the level ofpH at 5.0 during fermentation, correlated positively with the synthesis of protein. The rate of NaOH utilization during fermentation could be used as an indication of growth of or protein synthesis by an organism when other methods cannot be used immediately.
