SummaryLaboratory infections ofPorphyra perforatathallus discs with zoospores ofPythium marinumshowed that the colonization rate is markedly influenced by temperature, salinity, and the reproductive stage of the algal discs. The most rapid colonization rate occurred on discs obtained from reproductive areas of the alga, or areas immediately adjacent to these, when the discs were in diluted seawater with a salinity of 24%. and at 20 C. All species ofPorphyraexamined were capable of being infected in the laboratory as wasPorphyrella gardneri.

SUMMARYA number of morphological and reproductive similarities between members of the genusDictyuchusand those ofAchlyaprompted the present study of enzyme activities ofDictyuchus monosporus.Specific activities of phosphofructokinase, aldolase, isocitrate dehydrogenase, malate dehydrogenase, cytochrome oxidase, glucose 6-phosphate dehydrogenase, 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase, lactate dehydrogenase, alcohol dehydrogenase, and catalase inDictyuchuswere determined. The activities found were in general comparable to those found inAchlya ambisexualis, with the exceptions of glucose 6-phosphate dehydrogenase and 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase, whose activities were considerably lower inDictyuchus.

SUMMARYStudies have been carried out onPleurotus tuber-regium, a tropical sclerotial basidiomycete obtained in Nigeria. Both the Sclerotium and the fruit bodies are edible. The economic importance to the Nigerian people, particularly in traditional medicine, is discussed.When kept in a warm, humid atmosphere, the Sclerotium readily produced fruit bodies which matured within seven da. Minimum temperature for mycelial growth was around 15, optimum 35, and maximum around 40 C. The fungus utilized as carbon sources a number of carbohydrates including fructose, mannose, xylose, glucose, cellobiose, maltose, dextrin, starch, cellulose, mannitol and sorbitol.

SUMMARYA unique fungus characterized by the production of large, dark, multiseptate, fusiform chlamydospores is described and illustrated, and assigned to the new genusXylomyces, asX. chlamydosporis.The fungus has been found on several occasions on immersed dead, decaying wood, collected in a tide-water stream in southern Rhode Island, and is also known from a single collection made in Alabama. The new genus, placed in the Mycelia Sterilia of the Hyphomycetes, is suggestive of the fossil genusPluricellaesporites.

SUMMARYThirty-six species representing 26 genera were isolated from the intertidal area of selected Tampa Bay area beaches. Beaches used frequently and infrequently by bathers were found to differ in their species composition. Data from this study support other studies which suggest that the intertidal areas of maritime habitats may constitute a reservoir of fungal propagules (colony-forming units) of potentially pathogenic fungi. Thraustochytriaceous fungi as well as keratinolytic, cellulolytic, and thermotolerant species were also present. However, dermatophytes were not isolated in the 9-mon collecting period at any of the four beach sites.

SUMMARYWhen freeze-fractured fungal structures are critical point dried and then examined in the scanning electron microscope a number of structures are evident that are obscured by other techniques. A comparison of freeze-fracture to the techniques of razor blade sectioning and microtomy of wax-embedded or plastic-embedded material was carried out or reviewed from the literature. In most cases superior results can be obtained with the cryofracture technique followed by critical point drying.

SUMMARYElectron microscopy ofPyronema domesticumascocarps shows that paraphysis and ectal excipulum nuclei lack nucleoli. In contrast, the nuclei from the hyphal segments beneath the subhymenium possess prominent nucleoli. Nuclei that lack a nucleolus are smaller than those that possess a nucleolus.
