摘要:
ABSTRACTThe development of the multinucleate condition ofPeronospora tabacinasporangia was studied at 15 and 23 C using the fluorescent stain mithramycin. Sporangiophores and sporangia from infected leaf disks were collected 7 h after induction of sporulation and thereafter at 30 min intervals for 5 h. Since the developmental age of sporangia varied among sporangiophores within samples, length of sporangia was used as a proxy class variable for time. Initially, one nucleus migrated from the sporangiophore into each small (3μm). spherical sporangium. A predominant number of the developing sporangia in the 5–10μm classes incubated at 15 C had either 2, 4 or 8 (2n) nuclei. Chi-square analyses of the number of sporangia in these nuclear classes supported the hypothesis that nuclei were derived from 1 (22) or 2 (23) synchronous divisions of the daughter nuclei from the initial nucleus and not from random divisions or nuclear migration from the sporaqgiophore. Nuclei in developing sporangia incubated at 23 C exhibited one synchronous division (22). Subsequent divisions occurred randomly. The average number of nuclei in mature sporangia of the 3 isolates examined was approximately 15.

摘要:
ABSTRACTA new genus in the Entolomataceae is described from North America. While in many respects it is microscopically similar toRhodocybeMaire,Rhodocybelladiffers markedly fromRhodocybein three important features.Rhodocybellaproduces basidiomes with cupulate pendant pilei which are laterally attached, the hymenophore is smooth or produces a few rudimentary lamellar folds, and the hyphae of the pileipellis form knobby to subdiverticulate projections. These features are not found in members ofRhodocybe. Rhodocybella rhododendrihas only been collected from the surface of the periderm of livingRhododendron maximumL. stems after periods of heavy rainfall.

摘要:
ABSTRACTFourth instar larvae ofAedes aegypti, lightly infected withCoelomomyces stegomyiaewent on to pupate and produce adult mosquitoes which carried the fungal infection. Adult behavior related to taking of blood meals, copulation and oviposition were not affected by infection. The reproductive organs of adult male mosquitoes were not directly affected by the fungus but, following blood meals, the ovaries of females became filled with fungal resting sporangia and no eggs were produced. When infected females attempted to oviposit eggs, they instead oviposited small piles of resting sporangia. Zoospores from oviposited resting sporangia infected the harpacticoid copepodPhyllognathopus viguieriwith the gametophytic stage of the fungus.

摘要:
ABSTRACTSeven species aggregates ofTrichodermaandGliocladium virenswere isolated from roots ofPhellinus weirii-infested Douglas-fir stumps fumigated with chloropicrin, Vorlex, or methylisothiocyanate, or left untreated. Most commonly isolated wasTrichoderma viride, followed byT. hamatum, T. citrinoviride, G. virens, T. polysporum, T. saturnisporum, T. harzianum, andT. longibrachiatum.Roots from chloropicrin-treated stumps were more frequently colonized than those from untreated stumps, althoughT. citrinoviridewas more frequently found in untreated stumps.

摘要:
ABSTRACTTorrubiella ratticaudata sp. nov.is described from salticid spiders from the Solomon Islands. The anamorph of this fungus,Gibellula clavuliferavar.alba var. nov., produces ovoid conidia on phialides on penicilloid conidiophores and bacilliform conidia from polyblastic conidiogenous cells arising directly from the mycelium. Both teleo- and anamorphic states occur on spiders bearing a single, whip-like fungal stroma projecting from the tip of the host's abdomen.Gibellulais extended and emended to include species ofGranulomanus, which is regarded as a synonym ofGibellula. The different conditions under which morphologically distinct synanamorphs may reasonably be amalgamated in a single genus or should be retained in separate genera are discussed.Nomuraea atypicolaandGibellula pulchrawere also found on the spiders; no teleomorphic state for either of these species was present.

摘要:
ABSTRACTXeromphalina nubium sp. nov.is described from two table mountains, Cerro de la Neblina and ChimantáMassif, surrounded by lowland tropical forests in the Guayanan highlands of Venezuela. The representative of the latter location had been misdetermined asXeromphalina helbergeriSinger. The range ofX. helbergeriis extended to Cuba, Guatemala, and Jamaica from Argentina and Colombia. This species and allies are compared toX. nubium.

摘要:
ABSTRACTThe ultrastructure of dormant basidiospores ofPsilocybe cubensisis described. The spore wall is characterized by three distinct layers and a germ pore. A pore cap is described for the first time in a species ofPsilocybe. The protoplast is surrounded by a well defined plasma membrane with many distinct invaginations. Internally, large numbers of nonmembrane-bound lipids occur at both ends of the spore. Two nuclei are typically present and the nuclear envelope has many nuclear pores. Mitochondria with only a few, but well delineated, plate-like cristae are present. There is scant endoplasmic reticulum. Ribosomes occur regularly attached to the ER and outer mitochondrial membrane, as well as being densely packed throughout the cytoplasm. Variously sized vacuoles were demonstrated cytochemically to contain acid phosphatase. Microbody-like organelles are described but cytochemical tests to determine if these organelles are functionally similar to those of higher plants were unsuccessful. Cell-free extracts of basidiospores exhibit catalase and isocitrate lyase activity but no malate synthase activity.

摘要:
ABSTRACTThe lag phase encountered during the germination of basidiospores ofSchizophyllum communewas extended by 5–8 h upon the addition of cell-free extracts prepared from dikaryotic fruitbodies; after this delay, germination progressed normally. Bovine serum albumin did not have any inhibitory effects on germination. This delay of germination was dependent on the amount of protein in fruitbody extracts, with maximum effects being observed at 400μg protein/ml. Treatment of spores with fruitbody extracts for as short as 5 min was sufficient to cause maximal delay of spore germination. Addition of fruitbody extract to spores after eight hours of inoculation in broth had no effect on germination. This inhibitory activity present in fruitbody extracts was specific in that basidiospore germination was only inhibited by cell-firee extracts prepared from homologous dikaryotic fruitbodies. The delaying substance was sensitive to proteases and heat but unaffected by DNase or RNase, suggesting that the factor is a protein.

摘要:
ABSTRACTUredia ofCronartium quercuumf. sp.fusiformeoccurred commonly on leaves of northern red oak seedlings after inoculation and incubation at 9–18 C. On water oak, uredia were most frequent at 15 C. Almost six times as many urediospores were produced on northern red oak leaves after incubation at 16 C than at 18 C. Leaves that were 50–80% mature when inoculated produced urediospores over a longer time period than did 95% mature leaves. Urediospores were better inoculum than aeciospores for the production of urediospores. The ratio of urediospore production to spore inoculum ranged from 3.6 to 19.7, depending on inoculum type and density with the larger ratios at the lower densities.
