摘要:
SUMMARYThe oomyceteLagenidium giganteum, a facultative parasite of mosquito larvae, requires exogenous sterols for the genesis of zoospores when grown on defined or on usual mycological media. Growth media prepared from oil-rich materials such as soy or hemp seed were very effective inducers for zoospores as were the crude oils obtained therefrom when used in conjunction with normal mycological media. The best individual sterols for zoosporangial growth were sitosterol and campesterol, and less effectively ergosterol and cholesterol. A number of synthetic sterols such as cholesteryl phosphate and cholestan-3 beta-ol were also good inducers; sitosteryl glucoside was also utilized. The sterol requirement and the parasitic mode of existence ofLagenidium giganteumwere compared to those of species ofPythiumandPhytophthora.

摘要:
SUMMARYAn ascomycete collected frequently from wood submerged in the estuarine portion of the Patuxent River, Maryland, is described as a new genus in the family Halosphaeriaceae. It is most closely related to two monotypic genera in this family,Nais inornataandLignincola laevis; however, it differs from both of them in color and morphology of the perithecium and in ascus and ascospore structure.

摘要:
SUMMARYFlammulina velutipesfruitbodies were grown on nutrient-supplemented poplar sawdust. Cells in the middle and tip of the stipe became longer with increasing fruitbody length, but cells at the base ceased to elongate when fruitbodies reached 2–3 cm. Cell width also increased in elongating stipes. Elongation of cells of the middle region accelerated at the onset of rapid stipe growth, continued at maximum rate (110μm/day) for three-quarters of that phase, and had almost ceased when the rate of stipe growth declined. Cells in the apical region of the stipe elongated at only about one-seventh the rate of the middle cells during rapid stipe elongation. The stipe growth zone reached its maximum length during the latter phase of rapid stipe elongation, and then became shorter and restricted to the upper stipe. Cell elongation in the middle and upper middle stipe regions accounted for most of the stipe elongation but this was accompanied by cell divisions. The number of stipe cells in a row almost quadrupled between the primordium stage and the onset of rapid elongation and increased by 40% thereafter.Stipe and pileus cells were usually binucleate in primordia. Subsequently, cells of the stipe and pileus context became multinucleate but those of the lamellar trama remained binucleate. The number of nuclei in stipe cells almost doubled during early fruitbody development, and increased to a mean of 9.1-9.2 in the middle and tip cells during rapid stipe elongation. In basal cells the nuclear number reached its maximum before the onset of rapid growth. No correlation was found between nuclear number and cell size.

摘要:
SUMMARYThe aquatic hyphomycetePleuropedium tricladioidesis reported for the first time from the freshwater nematodeNeomesomermis flumenalis. The optimum temperature for growth of the fungus was 20 C. Concentrations of phosphate in the range of 2.5 to 90 mM were equivalent in their growth yield, and the optimumpH range for growth was 4.75 to 5.75. Concentrations of vitamin-free casamino acids under the conditions used were limiting at 2 g/liter and lower; 4, 6, 8 and 10 g/liter produced the maximum mycelial yields. Glucose utilization was not detected until da 6 of incubation; however, by the time the peak of the growth curve had been reached (da 13) 92% of the glucose had been utilized. The utilization of ninhydrin-positive substances from media containing casamino acids with and without glucose was determined. The compounds L-serine, L-alanine, L-methionine, L-leucine, L-phenylalanine and L-arginine were utilized both in the presence and absence of glucose. Ammonia was utilized in the presence of glucose and produced in its absence. L-glutamine and/or L-asparagine and DL-cystathionine were released into the medium only in the presence of glucose. The polyamines putrescine, cadaverine and spermine were not detected in either medium during the 18-da incubation period. Spermidine was detected in trace amounts in the medium initially containing glucose on da 16, 17 and 18.

摘要:
SUMMARYFive new species ofMelanoleuca(Tricholomataceae) from boreal, alpine and arctic habitats are described. In addition, five other species are treated including several previously unreported from North America. New ecological information and unreported distributions in tundra and boreal habitats are reported for all ten species. Microscopic and macroscopic features are described and discussed, accompanied by camera lucida drawings and black and white photographs. A key to the species is presented.

SUMMARYThe phragmosporous generaMagnaportheandTelimenellaare placed in the Physosporellaceae.Ceratosphaeria griseais transferred toMagnaportheandTelimenella phacidioideais newly described. The differences betweenHyponectriaandPhysalospora, both amerosporous genera of the family, are clarified. The species assigned toHyponectriaare separated in a key and are briefly described. The new speciesH. betulinaandH. gregariaare introduced;Laestadia auripunctum, Sphaeria cooptera, Sphaerella depressa, Guignardia lonicerae, Sphaeria magnoliae, Guignardia populi, andLaestadia rubescensare transferred toHyponectria.

摘要:
SUMMARYThe balanoid (acorn-shaped) aecium of the trellis rust,Gymnosporangium fuscum (=G. sabinae)is morphologically distinctive and ecologically unique among cedar rusts for its shape and effective mechanism of spore discharge. The hygroscopic peridia remain closed in damp air during the night, but repeatedly split open during dry and windy weather in daytime. The delicate mechanism enables trellis rust the maximum production and distribution of spores. No other plant rust is known to possess such an advanced mechanism for the discharge of aeciospores.
