摘要:
SUMMARYA qualitative study of soil fungi from an alpine area of Wyoming has been done. This is the first such study reported from the United States. Thirty-two species of fungi were isolated of which 7 species were Phycomycetes, 3 Ascomycetes, and 22 Fungi Imperfecti. One new species,Mucor saximontensis, and one new variety,Gliocladium roseumvar.virideare described.

SUMMARYThe soil microfungi in five northern Wisconsin open bogs and ten conifer swamps have been surveyed. Two hundred isolates from eight sites in each community were identified or characterized and frequencies for all entities were calculated. The number of entities per community ranged from 10 to 68, and the numbers of entities per unit (1000 isolates) were 108 (open bogs), 104 (Picea-Larixswamps), and 181 (Thuja-Abiesswamps). Only 5–9 species in each unit had average frequencies of 30% or higher. Mycelia Sterilia 3157, Eurotiaceae gen. n.? 4084,Penicillium odoratum, Penicillium (Paecilomyces ?)sp. 3908, andGeotrichum candidumare prevalent in open bogs;Mortierella vinaceaIII,Periconiasp. 3284,Penicillium odoratum, Cryptococcus laurentii, Oidiodendron flavumvariant, and one unidentified yeast inPicea-Larixswamps; andTorulopsis aeria, Cryptococcus laurentii, Trichoderma viride, T. album, and one unidentified yeast inThuja-Abiesswamps. In the populations as a whole, Ascomycetes, yeasts, Dematiaceae, andMortierellaspecies were common, whereasAspergillus, Fusarium, and Sphaeropsidales were rare. Approximately one-half of the identified species appear to be absent or rare in mineral soils, but several are well-known wood, wood-pulp, or litter forms. Species composition in the microfungal communities is correlated with species composition and maturity in the overlying higher plant community.

SUMMARYTwo isolates ofF. roseumwere grown in a chemically defined liquid medium containing MgSO4, microelements, and a carbon and nitrogen source. The relation of time to mycelium formation in shaken and stationary cultures was studied. Shaking did not significantly alter the rate of growth nor the maximum amount of mycelium produced. Maximum mycelium had formed by the sixth or ninth day with glucose and asparagin. The two isolates differed in their response to the various carbon sources studied. The best carbon sources for both isolates were xylose, galactose, maltose, sucrose, raffinose, and starch. Glucose and cellobiose supported only moderate growth. Lactose, cellulose, alcohols and organic acids (acetic, citric, fumaric, lactic, malic, succinic, tartaric) were relatively poor sources of carbon, although growth occurred in all. The two isolates utilized a variety of nitrate, ammonium and organic nitrogenous compounds with glucose as the carbon source; however, they differed in their response to specific compounds. Isolate No. 1 consistently produced more mycelium than isolate No. 2. Generally, organic nitrogen was the best source, ammonium compounds next best, and nitrates the poorest. The pH values of the residual liquid media was determined at the end of all experiments and no inhibitory pH levels developed.

SUMMARYA new marine ascomycete,Spathulospora phycophila, from Victoria, Australia, occurring on the alga,Ballia callitricha, is described and discussed briefly. This pyrenomycete is characterized by the profusely villous ascocarps and nonseptate spores provided with bluntly tapered apices, each of which has a lateral, appressed, gelatinous appendage.

SUMMARYRhizidiomyces apophysatusZopf, a water mold with anteriorly uniflagellate zoospores, has been studied at the motile zoospore stage, during the process of encystment, and to the point of the first mitotic division of the cyst nucleus. A spiralled banding of the tinsels was discovered, and made it possible to demonstrate that hairs present on the encysted zoospores are the former tinsels of the flagella. The zoospore has the usual cellular organelles which have been described but differs significantly from other fungal zoospores studied in that the ribosomes, which elsewhere occur in a membrane-limited packet, are here free in the cytoplasm but aggregated around the nucleus. The flagellum is attached to a basal body which is the modified form of the larger of two centrioles which lie next to each nucleus in growing cells. The second centriole lies to one side of the basal body in swimming cells and it is suggested that this centriole may be what Koch called a vestigial blepharoplast in other Phycomycetes. Arising from the centrioles are tubules which run below the surface of the zoospore. Another set of fibrils or tubules which is enclosed in a membrane and which probably forms networks within the spore is also described. Nuclear division inR. apophysatusis intranuclear and mitotic with a spindle.
