摘要:
SUMMARYA new species ofEurotiumis described asE. heterocaryoticum, isolated from rough rice (Oryza sativaL.) stored for 1–2 months at moisture contents between 14 and 15%. The conidial state is a newAspergillus, described asA. heterocaryoticus. The fungus is osmophilic and exists in two color phases, one with white conidial heads and the other with medium to dark brown conidial heads. Heterocaryosis between the two types is common in culture.

摘要:
SUMMARYAn examination of the type material ofEndogone fasciculatahas given rise to substantial doubt that the chlamydospores and zygospores included belong to the same species. Therefore, the chlamydosporic sporocarps have been designated as the lectotype for this species.Maize and tuliptrees inoculated withE. fasciculatadeveloped vesicular-arbuscular mycorrhizae. Sporocarps formed in pot culture on or near maize roots. Vesicles in roots and spores borne free in the soil or in sporocarps do not differ in any important respect and are all regarded as chlamydospores. Gaullaud's Arum type of mycorrhiza developed on inoculated maize plants. On inoculated tuliptrees, mycorrhizae very similar to Gallaud's Paris type formed. Vesicles produced byE. fasciculatamechanically damaged the cortex of maize roots. However, maize inoculated withE. fasciculataand grown in soil low in phosphorus produced more than twice as much dry weight as uninoculated maize. Mycorrhizal maize removed more phosphorus and potassium from soil than nonmycorrhizal maize. Tuliptrees grown in moderately fertile soil and inoculated withE. fasciculatamade good growth. Uninoculated tuliptrees grown in this soil remained stunted.

摘要:
SUMMARYThis account deals with two leafblight fungi occurring on mountain laurel,Kalmia latifoliaL. The diseases caused by both these fungi are quite alike in gross appearance. Ascigerous stages of the pathogens develop on fallen leaves. One causal fungus, aPhysalospora, differs from the five other species known to occur on Ericaceae, and is consequently described asP. kalmiae. The second pathogen has been known only in its conidial state from the District of Columbia. It is believed to be distinct from three other species ofDiaportheinfecting Ericaceous plants, and is described asD. kalmiae. Its conidial stage isPhomopsis kalmiaeEnlows. Material upon which the two taxa were based has been sent to the National Fungus Collection, Washington, D. C.
