SUMMARYThe activity of five enzymes was examined during sexual morphogenesis ofSchizophyllum commune.Four of the enzymes showed significant differences in specific activity when the hymenium and spores were compared. Where applicable, the enzyme activity of the spores represented a return to the level of activity found in the vegetative stage. When the activity of the enzymes was examined in sporulation-inhibited fruit bodies, the changes in specific activity associated with sporulation did not occur in the inhibited hymenium. Since the inhibition (s) is known to occur late in the sporulation process, the evidence suggests that the changes in enzyme activity also occur at a late stage.

摘要:
SUMMARYA new type of screw-lid closure is described which includes a hole sealed with a metricel filter. Such lids are autoclavable and may be reused. Complete protection of culture vessels sealed with such lids is ensured. It is impossible for mite infestation to occur, or for contamination of the contained cultures by unwanted microorganisms. By using such lids in the standard ASTM: D1413-76 procedure, normal fungal growth, respiration and decay of wood blocks occurred with a filter lid hole diam of about 0.64 cm.

SUMMARYFour different staining procedures were performed on 35 species and four varieties in the following genera of rhodophylloid fungi:Leptonia, Nolanea, Entoloma, Alboleptonia, Rhodocybe, andClaudopus.Six features were correlated with existing generic and subgeneric taxa. Histochemically,Leptoniais distinguished by the presence of granules and dark staining cells in the pileipellis. The subgenusLeptoniapossesses only dark staining cells, whereas the subgenusPaludocybepossesses both dark staining cells and“granules.”Alboleptoniais distinguished by a distinctively colored suprapellis.Rhodocybeis distinguished due to a green sublayering effect in the pileipellis andClaudopusby unique color reactions of the suprapellis in three of the four staining procedures employed. Species ofNolaneapossess a distinctive coloration of the subpellis (pileipellis) while other reactions are absent.Entolomais distinguished by homogeneous coloration throughout the pileipellis. Based upon the specific reactions with the stains in each of the genera, different macrochemical as well as microchemical tests to define the genera are suggested.

SUMMARYConidium development ofExserohilum rostratumwas partially inhibited by light at 28 and 31 C, and completely inhibited at 34 C. Older conidiophores were very sensitive to inhibitory wavelength and readily dedifferentiated into vegetative aerial mycelia. Light was effective in stimulating spore elongation during the formation of conidiophores as well as during the development of conidia. Exposure to light during the formation of conidiophores in the inductive phase resulted in the formation of rostrate conidia in the subsequent dark-terminal phase. The effect was greatest in young conidiophores incubated below 24 C. The phenomenon was not evident when older conidiophores were exposed to light.

SUMMARYDevelopment of the protuberant conidial hilum, an important characteristic in the genusExserohilum, is markedly affected by temperature. Temperatures higher than 28 and 34 C inhibited the formation of protuberant conidial hilum inE. turcicumandE. rostratum, respectively. InE. pedicellatumprotuberant conidial hilum formation was partially inhibited at 34 C. These critical temperatures for inhibition of protuberant hilum coincided with those for inhibition of sporulation by light. Continuous light had no discernible effect on the development of hila, except for the stimulation of production of protuberant hila at 24 C inE. turcicum.

SUMMARYThe monotypic genusCerradoaonAttalea ceraensisfrom Federal District, Brazil is the first rust fungus to be found on Palmae. It has superstomatal sori and is closest to the Andean genusEdytheaon Berberidaceae. We segregateEdytheafromDesmellaon ferns because the sporogenous cells ofEdytheaare produced on emergent hyphae outside of stomata, whereas inDesmellasporogenous cells originate within the substomatal cavity and then emerge.Desmellaand thoseHemileiaspecies with superstomatal type B sori of Gopalkrishnan produce almost identical, unique soral structures. We consider them closely related.Desmellopsis aframomicoladoes not produce truly superstomatal sori and is transferred toPuccinia.

SUMMARYThe ability ofTalaromyces emersoniito synthesize extracellular cellulase has been studied in stationary liquid medium. While this organism could not degrade filter paper, its cell-free filtrate hydrolyzed soluble carboxymethyl cellulose to reducing sugars. Hence it was suggested thatT. emersoniiwas able to synthesize the Cx, but not the C1enzyme. The optimum temperature for synthesis of the Cxenzyme was found to be 45 C, while that for its activity was 50 C. The bestpH for the enzyme activity was 6, and enzyme production was found to be affected by the concentration of cellulose in the medium. The probable participation ofT. emersoniiin the degradation of insoluble cellulose in the natural habitat and in the biodeterioration of stored agricultural products is discussed.
