摘要:
ABSTRACTDikaryons isolated from members of the generaBovista, Calvatia, Langermannia, Lycoperdon, andVascellumwere aberrant in two respects. Trinucleate cells occurred in all isolates occasionally becoming dominant within sectors of the mycelium. Clamp connections were absent or developed sporadically. In isolates where trinucleate cells occurred at high frequency, tetranucleate cells were relatively numerous. Degeneration of a nucleus within a tetranucleate cell is held responsible for the development of the trinucleate condition. The same mechanism enables a trinucleate cell to revert to the binucleate state characteristic of the typical dikaryon.

摘要:
ABSTRACTOn the eastern coast of central Ellesmere Island, adjacent to Alexandra Fiord (78°53′N, 75°55′W) is a lowland arctic oasis with relatively lush and diverse vegetation compared to the polar desert and ice fields that cover most of the surrounding area. Twenty-four species of plants were sampled at this site and their roots examined for fungal colonization. Although 19 species showed some irregular, interor intracellular colonization by rhizosphere fungi or endophytes, only 11 species could, by the morphology and extent of the fungal colonization, be classified as mycorrhizal. Dark-walled, septate endophytes andCenococcum-type mycorrhizal infections were not observed in our samples. Colonization classified as ectomycorrhizal was observed inSalix arctica, Dryas integrifolia, Pedicularis capitata, Saxifraga oppositifolia, Cassiope tetragona, andKobresia myosuroides.Colonization classified as ericoid mycorrhizal was observed inVaccinium uliginosum, Cassiope tetragona, and possibly inCarex nardinaandSilene acaulis.Arbutoid mycorrhizae were observed inPyrola grandiflora.Endomycorrhizae, with non-septate hyphae and arbuscles, but no vesicles, were observed in only one species,Dryopteris fragrans. The paucity of VA-mycorrhizal colonization in herbaceous species was notable at this site, especially when compared to reports for the same species from other arctic and alpine sites.

摘要:
ABSTRACTDiazonium blue B reagent was used to test staining reactions of mycelia of 96 species of ectomycorrhizal and ectomycorrhizal-like fungi grown for five weeks in liquid culture. Red to violet staining was seen in harvested mycelia of basidiomycetes treated in cold KOH while negative reactions indicated fungi with ascomycetous affinities. Non-treated mycelia gave a variety of different color responses which were generally species-specific. Mycelia ofCortinariusspecies and most boletes did not stain while most species ofHebeloma, Hygrophorus, LaceariaandTricholomastained yellow. A purely red staining reaction was restricted mainly to a few species within the Boletaceae. Results reveal potential value of diazonium blue B staining as a taxonomic character for identification of mycelia isolated from field-collected ectomycorrhizae.

摘要:
ABSTRACTAt onset of germination, spores ofS. pombeshow localized swelling, the first vestige of germ-tube extension by the spore wall. As germination progresses, the original spore wall becomes thinned at the site of extension and is medially replaced by a new germinative layer. Germ tube growth is not erumpent. Cytology of germination of other spores is compared.

摘要:
ABSTRACTDescriptions are provided of new basidiomycetous taxa based upon the teleomorph ofHyalopycnis blepharistoma; the taxa are: Heterogastridiales, Heterogastridiaceae,Heterogastridium, andHeterogastridium pycnidioideum. The type species is characterized by a pycnidioid basidiocarp with an internal basal hymenium. Phragmobasidia produce sessile, digitately branched basidiospores that are released passively. Ontogeny of the basidia, basidiospores, and septal pores has been studied. The septal pores are simple, but vary morphologically during ontogeny. Hyphal cells, conidiogenous cells, and conidia are dikaryotic. The structure of the spindle pole body indicates heterobasidiomycetous affinities.

摘要:
ABSTRACTFungi were isolated and collected from Alaska-yellow cedar (Chamaecyparis nootkatensis) trees and identified to help determine if any could be the primary cause of the extensive decline and mortality of this valuable tree species in southeast Alaska. Of the 20 taxa of fungi isolated and 33 collected, 36 taxa are new reports on Alaska-yellow cedar and 24 are new reports from Alaska on any host. Previously, 41 fungi were reported on Alaska-yellow cedar, therefore, a total of 77 fungi have now been reported on this tree species in its native range. Several potential pathogens were found in southeast Alaska:Armillariasp.,Gymnosporangium nootkatense, Seiridium cardinale, andApostrasseriasp.; however, their low incidence or association with non-symptomatic tissues of Alaska-yellow cedar suggests that none is the primary cause of the extensive decline and mortality.

摘要:
ABSTRACTMating experiments were conducted to determine the existence of biological species (intersterility groups) of the root-rotting fungus,Heterobasidion annosum(Basidiomycotina, Homobasidiomycetes) in North America. Initial screening utilized tester strains from Finland and identified representatives of both the“S”and“P”intersterility groups. Pairings of North American“S”group strains with North American“P”group strains, however, revealed a significant degree of interfertility between the two groups. The data indicate that intersterility is under the regulation of simple, Mendelian determinants. These genes are distinct and separable from the mating-type (incompatibility) locus. The data suggest thatH. annosumis undergoing speciation and may make an attractive model system for the study of evolutionary processes in higher fungi.
