摘要:
SUMMARYTwenty-one species of thermophilic and thermotolerant fungi were tested for the ability to degrade cellulose and lignocellulose.Thielavia thermophilais newly described as cellulolytic. OnlyChrysosporium pruinosumandSporotrichum pulverulentumwere found to degrade lignocellulose extensively. In a number of cases the moisture content of the solid substrate influenced degradation by the species tested.

摘要:
SUMMARYA study was made of the occurrence ofGibberella zeaein 102 samples of wheat marketed in 1975. Of the 19 zearalenone-positive samples,G. zeaeinfection of surface-sterilized wheat kernels ranged from 6% to 60%. NoG. zeaewas detected in 35 samples. The highest level of zearalenone was 11,054 ppb in a sample with 36% infection. In wheat, 17 samples with over 10% infection were positive for zearalenone and seven were negative.Aspergillus flavuswas detected in 53 samples with an infection of 2–46% but no aflatoxin was found. Various species ofAlternarlawere found in 100 of the 102 samples.

摘要:
SUMMARYGrowth and respiration ofMyrothecium verrucariawere studied under aerobic and anaerobic conditions. The enzymes of the major respiratory pathways were assayed and the biochemical functions of the mitochondria examined. The fungus did not grow or produce carbon dioxide anaerobically. Almost all enzymes of the Embden-Meyerhof-Parnas pathway, the hexose-monophosphate shunt and the tricarboxylic-acid cycle were active in cell-free preparations. The exceptions were alcohol dehydrogenase and pyruvate decarboxylase. Ethanol was not produced by the mycelium under aerobic or anaerobic conditions, but lactic acid was formed. The mitochondria oxidized NADH and succinate, but not pyruvate. Oxidative phosphorylation occurred, but the P/O ratios were only 0.7 to 0.9.

摘要:
SUMMARYRoots ofZea maysplants grown in soils of high organic content in reclaimed fields of the Albemarle-Pamlico peninsula of North Carolina were found to be abundantly infected withLigniera junci(Plasmodiophorales).Amaranthus hybridus, Eupatorium capillifolium, Panicum dichotomiflorum, Physalis angulata, andPolygonum lapathifoliumgrowing in the same fields were also infected withL. junci. In the greenhouse,L. juncidid not reduce growth ofZ. mays.Plants grew poorly in non-fumigated field soil but grew well in soil fumigated with methyl bromide or sodium azide. Infection byL. junciwas abundant in plants grown in non- fumigated soil and even more abundant in sodium-azide-fumigated soil.

摘要:
SUMMARYNutritional physiology of two isolates ofTrichothecium roseumwas investigated. Optimum temperature and pH for both the isolates were 28 C and 6.0, respectively. D-glucose was the the best substrate for both isolates. There was an increase in mycelial growth as the concentration of D-glucose was increased from 2.5 to 20 g/liter. The amount of growth varied with the nitrogen source, the best growth of the isolate fromMaluswas on L-asparagine and that of the isolate fromPrunuson L-glutamic acid. There was an increase in mycelial growth as the concentration of L-asparagine was increased. There appeared to be no correlation between mycelial growth and the rate of assimilation of amino acid. The presence or absence of amino acids had no correlation with presence or absence of glucose in the medium. The best C/N concentration for maximum growth (D-glucose: L-asparagine) was found to be 30:10.4 g/liter.

摘要:
SUMMARYThe Hyphomycetes,Aspergillus puniceus, A. ustusandFusarium solani, were isolated from enriched greenhouse soil, and shown to be capable of using the polyester, poly∊-caprolactone, as their sole carbon source. Possible synergistic and successional effects were studied. Statistical evaluation showed thatF. solaniwas initially the most effective decomposer of the plastic, but a spontaneous adaptive mutant ofA. ustus, which arose during the study, exhibited even higher activity. The monomer,∊-caprolactone, could also be used as sole carbon source byF. solaniand theA. ustusmutant.
