ABSTRACTBullera tsugaeandMalasseziaspp., which demonstrated laminar cell walls, stained red to violet with diazonium blue B (DBB).Sporopachydermia quercuum, an Ascomycete which demonstrated two-layered cell walls, gave a negative staining reaction. The finely laminar ultrastructure of the cell walls ofMalasseziaspp., which was similar to that ofFilobasidiella neoformans, and the positive DBB reaction suggest thatMalasseziais a basidiomycetous genus.

ABSTRACTThe structure of the concentric granules (CGs) ofAllomyces was studied following both conventional chemical fixation and freeze fracture. The structural features of the CGs are identical when prepared by either method. Analysis by EDAX revealed that the CGs contain phosphorus and perhaps sulfur. In thalli damaged by cutting with a scalpel blade, hyphal compartments adjacent to the damaged compartment frequently did not lose all of their cytoplasm. Rather, cytoplasmic flow was stopped at the septum between the damaged compartment and the adjacent compartment. The pores in these septa became occluded with CGs. Wall material formed between the CGs and the cytoplasm of the hyphal compartment adjacent to the damaged one. These adjacent hyphal compartments were often capable of renewed growth. Ultrastructural studies of the vegetative thallus of Microallomyces dendroideus, a species that lacks hyphal septa, revealed CGs that are structurally identical to those found inAllomycesspecies. Concentric granules that are structurally similar to the ones inAllomycesare present in the thallus ofBlastocladia ramosa.It was concluded that a significant role of CGs inAllomycesis to function as septal pore plugs but other functions for the CGs cannot be ruled out.

ABSTRACTSpores ofGigasporaandScutellosporaspecies predominated in the root zones of three major plant species growing in the barrier dunes extending from northern New Jersey to Virginia. Similarity in edaphic factors, vegetation, daylength during the growing season, and precipitation along a 355 km transect permitted study of the composition of the VAM fungal community in response to temperature. Twenty-three species of VAM fungi were recovered. Dominant species along the transect wereG. gigantea, Acaulospora scrobiculata, andS. dipapillosa.Some species were more abundant in the northern (cooler) regions of the transect and others were more abundant in the southern regions. Average VAM fungal species richness was positively correlated with distance south along the transect and with temperature parameters. Temperature effects on the VAM fungal community may be separated into two components, a direct effect on the fungi and an indirect effect mediated through the host plant. Plots of rank/log Importance Value depicted the structure of the VAM fungal community and were of use in identifying severe habitats where heat stress appeared to be the controlling factor. Dominance by a single fungal species was inversely correlated with distance south and with temperature parameters. It was most pronounced in northern sites and in the root zones of heat-stressedAmmophila breviligulataplants growing near the species' southern limit.

ABSTRACTThis study used restriction fragment polymorphisms in nuclear and mitochondrial DNA to confirm what had been surmised from the studies of mating interactions among isolates ofArmillaria mellea(broad sense): that the“biological species”are distinct entities among which genetic divergence has occurred. We examined the DNAs of 16 isolates representing 8 biological species. Three different types of DNA were used as probes in Southern hybridizations with EcoRI-digested, whole-cell or nuclear DNAs: i) total mitochondrial DNA from a strain of biological species I, ii) ten bacterial plasmid clones carrying randomEcoRIfragments of nuclear DNA from a strain of biological species I, and iii) a plasmid clone carrying the entire rDNA repeat fromSehizophyllum commune.Most of the restriction fragments identified were variable in the sample and most of the variability was between, rather than within, biological species.

ABSTRACTIn this report on black mildew and fly-speck fungi from Brazilian Amazonia, ten new species and three new varieties are described and one new combination is made. A few known taxa are discussed.
