摘要:
SUMMARYThe resting spore ofPhlyctochytrium planicorneenlarges within a resting sporangium, distends it, and discharges endogenously cleaved planonts which cluster at the orifice. InP. aureliae, the resting spore functions directly as a sporangium, and the endogenously cleaved planonts swim at once upon release. The thallus form ofNowakowskiella elegansis influenced by substratum, but resting spore development and discharge pattern are identical in all forms. The resting spore functions as an operculate sporangium or a prosporangium; planonts are cleaved endogenously or in part exogenously, and cluster at the orifice before swimming.Nowakowskiella crassa, N. delica, andN. profusaare reduced to synonymy underN. elegans.

摘要:
SUMMARYPlasmodial (somatic) incompatibility reactions in the Ven 1 isolate of the myxomycetePhysarum cinereumare controlled by two unlinked loci displaying simple dominance. Phenotypically dissimilar plasmodia undergo temporary fusions which are quickly terminated by a cytotoxic reaction, whereas phenotypically similar ones undergo fusions which are not followed by such reactions. Each locus allows a killed zone (area of cytotoxicity) of characteristic size when acting alone, but when the two loci act together they may reduce the size of the zone with a genetically additive effect. These reactions are generally unidirectional for each locus, with killing taking place in the recessive phenotype.

摘要:
SUMMARYThe type species,Halocyphina villosa, is redescribed. It has a cyphellaceous habit, external hairs with walls soluble in 10% KOH, context hyphae with rare clamp connections, basidia and asymmetric spores. It is similar to the cyphellaceous basidiomycete generaHenningsomycesandRectipilus.

摘要:
SUMMARYA new species ofGastroboletus, G. laricinus, is described. A detailed discussion of the differences between this species andSuillus grevilleiand the ecological conditions under which both were observed at the type locality suggest thatGastroboletusis an independent genus andG. laricinusan independent taxon. The implications with regard to the evolution of Basidiomycetes are discussed, but our present data do not provide proof of an ancestral or derived position ofGastroboletusin relation to the genera of Boletaceae.

摘要:
SUMMARYTwo strains of filamentous, branching, budding organisms were isolated, one from sand and the other from the foam of a sewage-treatment pjant. These organisms are very fine, their hyphae and cells having a diameter of about 1μm. They differ from actinomycetes in having a eucaryotic cytology, walls with no murein and being resistant to antibacterial antibiotics and sensitive to strictly antifungal ones. Considered as fungi they have been tentatively placed in the genusFusidiumLink. Unusual cytological features were observed. These included nuclei and mitochondria with membranous extensions, looped cristae in some mitochondria, an atypical nuclear membrane and an abundance of mesosomes.

摘要:
SUMMARYFuligo septicaspores in mass suspensions germinate with logarithmic kinetics, indicating that spore germination is a complex, controlled phenomenon and not random. Spores germinate at higher rates in filtrates of spore suspensions than in phosphate buffer. The amount of stimulation of germination is related to the degree of dilution of the filtrates and the age of the spores from which the filtrates are prepared. Evidence indicates that spore germination is influenced by a soluble, dialyzable, auto-catalytic factor associated with the spores that is present in the aethalium prior to the moistening of the spores.

摘要:
SUMMARYRates of growth, sporulation, and spore germination were determined for thermophilic and thermotolerant fungi incubated in the field in sunheated soil and in shade, and in the laboratory at constant temperature. Continuous recordings of temperatures of sun-heated soils are presented. The thermophilic fungiAllescheria terrestris, Chaetomium thermophilevar.dissitum, Dactylomyces thermophilus, Humicola lanuginosa, Malbranchea pulchellavar.sulfurea, Mucor miehei, M. pusillus, Thielavia albomyces, T. heterothallica, Talaromyces emersomi, andThermoascus aurantiacus, and the thermotolerant fungusAspergillus fumigatus, grew when incubated in sun-heated temperate soil. All species which rapidly produced spores in the laboratory at 37 C also sporulated in sun-heated soil. Asexual spores ofMucor miehei, M. pusillus, Humicola lanuginose, andDactylomyces thermophilusgerminated in sun-heated soil. It is concluded that the fluctuating temperature regime of sun-heated temperate soils provides sufficiently high temperatures of sufficient duration for most species of thermophilic and thermotolerant fungi to complete their life cycles; temperature per se is not limiting for growth, sporulation, and germination. For some species, direct sun-heating is not necessary for these processes; suitable temperatures occur in shaded temperate soils.
