摘要:
The paper reviews the studies of various insect pests infesting mungbean or green gram,Vigna radiate(L) Wilczeck, in India. A total of 64 species of insects reported to attack mungbean in the field have been tabulated. Information on distribution, biology, ecology, natural enemies, cultural, varietal and chemical methods of control etc. of whitefly,Bemisia tabaciGenn, leaf hopper,Empoasca kerriPruthi, black aphid,Aphis craccivoraKoch, Bihar hairy caterpillar,Diacrisia obliqua(WIK), galerucid beetle,Madurasia obscurellaJacoby, stem fly,Ophiomyia (Melanagromyza) phaseoli(Tryon), lycaenid borer,Euchrysops cnezusFabr, and spotted caterpillar,Maruca testulalisGeyer, is included.

摘要:
Field surveys and laboratory and greenhouse experiments were conducted to study the off‐season survival mechanism and seasonal carry‐over of the sorghum shootfly,Atherigona soccata. In Kenya, active populations of the shootfly survive on tillers produced by sorghum,Sorghum bicolorstubble and wild sorghum,Sorghum arundinaceumduring the off‐season. No evidence was obtained to support the suggestion that shootflies undergo aestivation‐diapause as a mechanism of off‐season survival. There was also no indication of a higher reproductive potential for the off‐season shootflies which can account for any rapid build‐up of the population in the beginning of the sorghum‐growing season. Removal and destruction of wild sorghum and sorghum stubble after harvest would disrupt the carry‐over of the shootfly and hence may prove to be an effective cultural method of control.

摘要:
Permethrin applied as a spray to cattle at 0.025% or 0.05% effectively controlledBoophilus microplus(Canestrini) by the third day post‐treatment, but only provided < 60% control within 1 day post‐treatment with both concentrations. Percentage control did not drop below 90% until day 28 for 0.025% and day 31 for 0.05% permethrin; percentage control did not fall below 92% for 0.025% fenvalerate until after day 24–25; and at 0.05%, fenvalerate provided 95% control until day 28. A multiple treatment (spray applied every 2 weeks) with permethrin (0.05%) provided greater than 96% control ofB. microplusafter the initial treatment and 100% control by day 56. We concluded that although both chemicals have potential in an eradication program, they are not satisfactory for use at a quarantine line because both acaricides provided less than 100% control within 1 day post‐treatment.

摘要:
Ticks were collected for comparative observations on theiroccurrencebetween host groups at Msekera Regional Research Station, Chipata, in the Eastern Province of Zambia. Ticks from cattle (domestic animals) were collected throughout the year. These were compared with ticks collected from rodents (wild animals) in the same cattle pastures. It was found that tick numbers parasitizing these host groups differ with the seasons of the year. Rodents were heavily infested during the dry season (June to October), while ticks were found parasitizing cattle in low numbers during this season. By contrast, ticks infested cattle heavily during the wet season (November to April), while rodents were lightly infested.

摘要:
Bacterial leaf spot of pepper,Capsicum annumL., characterized by small dark moist spots on the underside of the leaflets which eventually become brown or black and dry scabby, is reported for the first time from Pakistan. Isolations from diseased plants collected from Islamabad yielded two isolates: Xcv1and Xcv2ofXanthomonas campestrisvar.vesicatoria(Doidge) Dawson from bell pepper,C. annumvar.grossumand ornamental pepper,C. annumvar.minimumrespectively. The cultures were pathogenic in cross inoculations to both hosts and gave hypersensitive reactions in tobacco plant. The isolate Xcv1produced a copious yellow slime on yeast extract dextrose CaCO3at 25°C and 48 h incubation. These cultures were biochemically and physiologically similar.

摘要:
In Zanzibar, East Africa, trunk injection techniques are being used to investigate the aetiology of sudden‐death disease of clove trees,Eugenia caryophyllus(Sprengel) Bullock and Harrison. A low‐pressure trunk injection system is described which has proved itself capable of frequently injecting 5 / of solution into trees in less than 1 h. Uptake rates for injections using two different designs of injection nozzle and different chemical solutions are presented and compared.

摘要:
Field investigations on a moderately fertile silty clay loam soil in the northwestern Himalayas revealed that the weed flora in wheat crops in this zone comprised mainly of three grassy weeds:Phalaris minorRetz.,Avena fatuaL. andLolium temu‐lentumL. Cultural manipulations such as closer spaced rows, i.e. 15 cm spacing between rows, and/or cross row sowing in combination with the application of isoproturon at 0.50 kg a.i./ha applied 2 weeks after sowing significantly reduced the density ofPhalaris minorandAvena fatuaweeds. The dry weight of these grassy weed species was significantly lowered with the application of isoproturon irrespective of its rate and time of application. Isoproturon application at a rate of 1 kg a.i./ha or 0.50 kg a.i./ha in combination with cross row sowing, normal row spacing of 22.5 cm or closer spaced rows of 15 cm reduced the weed competition and resulted in positive advantages in yield attributes and increased the grain yield of wheat.

摘要:
An inventory of beneficial insect species (parasites and predators) has been conducted in the central region of Saudi Arabia in an attempt to assess the role played by these biological control agents in this ‘oasis‐country”;. Over 91% of the total beneficial insects collected were found in four orders, Hymenoptera (44.7%), Coleoptera (25.5%), Diptera (10.6%) and Odonata (10.6%). The Hemiptera‐Heteroptera and Neuroptera each contributed only 4.3% of the total. The rich fauna is in keeping with the biological balance in the different agro‐ecosystems or closed ecosystems of both localities. The need is stressed for more collection and inventory research of these beneficial insects.

摘要:
Application of spores ofNosema locustaeCanning on wheat bran to field plots in Cape Verde and Mauritania, resulted in infection of most species of Acrididae. The species infected includedOedaleus senegalensis(Krauss),Diabolocatantops axil‐laris(Thunberg),Pyrgomorpha cognataKrauss,Acrotylus longipes incarnatus(Krauss) andPseudosphingonotus savignyi(Sauss.). In the laboratory, inoculations of spores, administered by feeding, resulted in infections inAcorphya glaucopsis(Walker),Aiolopus simulatrix(Walker),Cataloipus cymbiferus(Krauss),Cryptocatantops haemorrhoidalisKrauss,Kraussaria angulifera(Krauss),Oedaleus nigeriensisUvarov,O. senegalensisandZonocerus variegatus (L.).Based on the taxonomic diversity of these species, it is likely that most, if not all, West African grasshoppers are susceptible to infection byN. locustae.
