摘要:
Environmentalists are concerned about several problems of Third World pest management. Human intoxications, poisoning of wildlife and residues result from indiscriminant use of pesticides. Use of Green Revolution technologies have exacerbated social inequities, led to increase reliance on monocultures, destroyed genetic resources and led to environmental degradation. A conceptual turnaround is required. Necessary components of a sustainable agriculture are discussed.

摘要:
Increases in agricultural productivity will continue to depend upon technological innovation. Pesticides are essential to efficient, competitive crop production. The agrochemical industry will continue to develop novel products which are likely to be more costly, less injurious to the environment, and more active against pests.

摘要:
Traditional lowland rices of Asia are photoperiod sensitive and ripen at the end of themonsoonrainy season, producing stable but low yields even under environmental extremes. The dry season fallow of these single rice crop systems breaks insect and plant virus disease cycles limiting pest buildup. Modern rices developed in the sixties to feed a growing human population attain their high yielding potential with good water control but are intolerant of drought or floods.

摘要:
Since 1973, the CIAT Bean Progam has focused on disease resistance breeding, with selection for performance under low input conditions and adaptation to farmers’ current production systems. This strategy was chosen to make new bean technology more accessible to resource poor farmers in low income countries than had been the products of the Green Revolution approach of selecting for maximum yield under optimum high input conditions. A case study of adoption of new disease resistant bean varieties among small farmers in Costa Rica shows that the disease resistance strategy has resulted in varieties that improve productivity even in farmers’ traditional shifting cultivation system. However, many small farmers are finding it advantageous to intensify management in order to raise the gains from the new varieties. Such success in a disease resistance, small farm‐oriented crop improvement program, depends critically on strong national agricultural research capacity, and a continuing commitment to deploy new resistance sources in locally adapted materials.

摘要:
The transformation of traditional agriculture to agricultural systems which foster growth and development requires the availability of improved crop production and crop protection inputs, as well as the skills to safely and effectively utilize these inputs. The typical progression of agricultural development involves an initial focus on increasing crop yields, with pest management as a secondary consideration and the safety and health aspects of agricultural practices as tertiary considerations. This common hierarchy can lead to inefficiencies because of the close interrelatedness of crop production and crop protection in determining the profitability and stability of new agricultural systems. This article outlines the advantages of simultaneous rather than sequential address of crop production, protection, and safety in agricultural development.

摘要:
This paper suggests that knowledge of human social and cultural processes in relation to pest management is crucial for rural development efforts. Concepts of human interaction in this activity have passed from notions of pest ‘control’ to pest ‘management’. Here recent farming systems research with small farmers has demonstrated that these indigenous systems have much to offer problem‐solving efforts in farming and human health including innovations derived from indigenous pest management practices.

摘要:
Several programmed instructional modules (for self‐paced and/or reinforced learning) in pest management were utilized at the Pan American School of Agriculture (Honduras) and the University of Guayaquil (Ecuador) within existing courses of plant protection. Three modes of delivery were employed: autotutorial, conventional lecture, and conventional lecture + slide illustration. Student performance, as measured by the percentage differences between pre‐and post‐module examination, were determined, and significant differences did occur among modules and among modes of presentation. Up to a 41% drop in the standard error of post‐instruction (v. pre‐instruction) test scores occurred, indicating our modules had a ‘standardizing’ effect on student users. The utility of programmed instructional learning in the developing world and on the need to tailor ‘mode of delivery’ to the subject being taught are discussed.

摘要:
During the last 25 years there have been big increases in rice production in tropical areas associated with the introduction of high‐yielding varieties and the increased use of irrigation, fertilizers and pesticides. The increases in productivity have been achieved despite the losses due to many pests and diseases. This paper considers the five important virus diseases of tropical rice, some of the reasons for their increased prevalence and the measures being adopted for their control.
