摘要:
Susceptibility of a range of winter flowering annuals to root-knot nematode was determined from field and pot experiments. Data on per cent root-knot infestation, extent of galling and gall size were recorded. Annuals were divided into three categories, i.e., those which did not show infestation in either the field or in pots, those which showed a mild infestation in pots but not in the field, and those which showed infestation in both field and pot conditions. The data suggest that resistant annuals should be rotated and one type should not be planted in the same place year after year. Rotating a resistant annual with vegetables will control the nematode population.

摘要:
A rating chart is given which enables easy and accurate field assessment of damage by root-knot nematodes (Meloidogynespp.) on many crops, based on the percentage and types of roots galled. It should be of use both to nematologists and untrained field workers.

摘要:
Yield and weed growth in dry-seeded rice (Oryza sativaL.) were unaffected by method of seeding. Weeds depressed rice yields by 95%. Fourteen weed species were found growing in association with dry-seeded rice at maximum flowering of the weeds.Echinochloa colona(L.) Link andLeptochloa chinensis(L.) Nees were the major weeds. A dramatic change in the weed flora was observed in transplanted rice planted immediately after the harvest of the dry-seeded crop. Only five species grew in association with the transplanted crop.Monochoria vaginalis(Burm.) Presl. dominated.E. colonaandL. chinensiswere present in transplanted rice but were only minor weeds. The number of weeds in the transplanted crop was less than 50%, and weighed only 5% as much as those in the dry-seeded crop. There was no carryover of the weed control treatments from the dry-seeded crop to the transplanted crop.

摘要:
Striga asiatica(L.) Kuntze, a root parasite, causes severe loss of yield in sorghum and several other crops. The seeds of the parasite are induced to germinate by a stimulant in the host root exudate. Presowing hardening of the host with vanillic acid, caffeic acid and ferulic acid (25 ppm) reduces the induction of seed germination in the parasite by the host root exudate. The treatment causes a slight improvement in the dry matter production in the host and in addition, increases the phenolics level in the host root exudate. The latter effect might be responsible for reducing germination inStriga. If the treatment remains effective under field conditions also, it reduces significantly the incidence ofStrigain cultivated fields.
