摘要:
The microscopes and slide sets used in the first-year histology course at the Medical College of Pennsylvania were supplemented by a videodisc-based histology atlas. We evaluated the impact of this technology on teaching in the laboratory setting and on the performance of 133 students on a laboratory exam. Interviews and questionnaire responses from students and faculty indicated that the videodisc system was well liked, easy to use, and often preferred to the microscope as a learning tool. The videodisc system provided a locus for student-student and student-staff educational interactions. An increase from the previous year in student lab practical scores was only partially accounted for by differences in the class composition. While some of the score increase may be due to a change in format of the exams, observation and interviews with students and teachers suggest that some of the score increase was attributable to the greater learning efficiency made possible by the videodisc atlas.

摘要:
The 'standard' curriculum in most Western medical schools provides in-depth coverage of basic science and clinical medicine, at a level probably unparalleled in human history. Yet there is widespread feeling among both medical educators and the public that certain areas vital to the physician, particularly those less dramatic and less technologically advanced, and those concerned with the physician-patient relationship, are taught less well. These deficits may in part also lie at the root of some of the dissatisfaction by the public with the medical profession as a whole. The chronically ill and disabled are among those most disadvantaged and discriminated against in society, and their problems are poorly understood by the healing professions. To address these issues, what is believed to be a unique course on the disabled in the community has been designed and carried out, the goal being to prepare medical students to face and deal with disabilities. The response has been most gratifying and enthusiastic, and in the present article the experience gained is presented.

摘要:
This paper describes an innovative, student-centred approach to the integrated study of histopathology, anatomy and physiology in which medical students are taught the skills that enable them to create computer-based multimedia tutorials aimed at third-year pre-clinical students. In addition to improving their technological skills, students acquire a broad range of personal and educational skills as they address the issues involved in planning and authoring their teaching materials.

摘要:
A survey to identify whether medical students had an understanding of the role of the occupational therapist was conducted. The results of the study found that the students' level of knowledge about occupational therapy reflected the clinical placements they had experienced. The findings of this study supports other work suggesting that some collaboration of multi-professional undergraduate education is required.

摘要:
To assess whether preclinical medical students hold liberal or conservative attitudes regarding abortion, we administered a standardized questionnaire to 72 second-year medical students at a large urban university. We enquired whether they considered abortion murder, or a legitimate personal choice, and under which circumstances they would perform abortions or refer patients for abortions. In general, students held more liberal attitudes toward abortion if they had had previous sexual experience, if they had been HIV tested, and if they were Jewish. Some 14% of students responded they would never perform or refer a patient for abortion under any circumstances. These findings raise the question of the degree to which physicians' personal beliefs about abortion may affect women's access to abortion as a therapeutic option, which is especially important in an era of increased limitation of physician choice.
