摘要:
abstract This article describes a sequential method for planning a medical curriculum using a competency approach, and based on accepted principles of learning. The steps are illustrated with the help of an example which is carried all the way from delineation of professional responsibilities to derivation of curricular content.

摘要:
This article describes the progressive development of professional skills at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Newcastle, Australia's newest medical school. These professional skills include information gathering (history taking and physical examination), information giving (patient information and education, case history write-up and case presentation) and management (counselling and monitoring) skills, as well as interpersonal, interactional and communication skills which are so important in the modern medical environment. The progressive development of these professional skills and their integration with basic, behavioural and clinical sciences in a problem-based curriculum is believed to be a rational approach to the development of an efficient, effective and caring doctor.

摘要:
A medical curriculum based on the exploration of clinical problems rather than traditional discipline content has provided an appropriate context for a course on human sexuality. The problem-based approach has ensured that students examine physical, psychological, social, religious and ethical aspects of the sexual difficulties with which doctors are commonly confronted. The course offers the opportunity for students to develop their capacity for effective communication. Assessments are also problem-based both in written format and in a role-played consultation. Explicit objectives direct student learning and tutors guide discussion in group tutorials with a minimum of formal teaching. Because the course precedes studies in the area of reproductive medicine, its aim is to equip students to communicate comfortably about sexual problems when opportunities arise later in the course. The effects of the course on the students was assessed using the Sexual Knowledge and Attitudes Test of Leif&Reid (1972). The major effects of the course as reflected in this test were the reduction in all students of the acceptance of sex myths and, in the case of younger students, an increased positive attitude on the autoeroticism measure. Sexual knowledge did not change significantly as a result of the course, a fact partly explained by the high initial scores in this area and by the courses concentration on affective aspects of learning rather than on cognitive or motor skills.

摘要:
This article investigates the effect on learning of adjunct aids accompanying printed text. The adjunct aids used are illustrations and questions. While there is considerable experimental literature on the effect of adjunct aids on learning from printed text and while this literature is generally affirmative, there is little experimentation either on the effect of these aids accompanying medical text or on the additive effect of these aids. This article shows that the use of adjunct illustrations can facilitate learning of specifiable information in the text but that there is a plateau effect on learning where more than one aid is used. The implications of these results are discussed for the design of instructional text.

摘要:
A short course in study-skills was conducted recently for the new entrants at two of the medical schools in Sri Lanka. This course was designed to help students to understand how different students learn, the problem of retention and forgetting, group learning habits and the need for developing self-directed lifelong learning. The course proved to be very popular with the students but its effectiveness would also depend on the school's curriculum and the way the teachers would continue to teach and evaluate students.
