摘要:
Patient education is an increasingly important part of modern health care. Health professionals' ability to effectively teach their patients is therefore an important concern for medical educators. This report describes a program designed to improve health professionals' teaching skills. Effective Patient Teaching is a 30-hour course which targets 20 specific teaching skills. Course time is approximately equally divided between lectures/demonstrations by faculty, and practice teaching by participants, followed by individual feedback. Comparison of first and last practice teaching sessions to operational definitions of teaching skills showed signifiant improvement in most teaching skills. This study suggests that rapid improvement in health professionals' patient teaching skills can be achieved in a program that includes modeling of effective skills, supervised practice, and appropriate feedback.

摘要:
Although residents in academic medical centers are expected to assume teaching responsibilities, very few have been trained on how to teach during medical school. Most learn to teach by emulating faculty role models, who commonly use an authoritative, information-giving style. This report describes three educational approaches which help prepare students to be more effective teachers by promoting problem-solving in learners. This project represents the first multi-educational institutional commitment which focuses on teaching medical students how to teach.

摘要:
This paper describes the transitions of students into medical school and from pre-clinical to clinical training. Intensive retrospective, introspective, and prospective interviews, rating scales, and written narratives were used to elicit students' experiences of difficulties and strategies adopted to overcome those difficulties and achieve their goals. The findings suggest that many students entering medical school are overwhelmed by the volume of work, much of which is perceived as irrelevant to their future roles as physicians. To cope with this difficulty they seek support from within, and outside of, the medical school. In some instances they lower their aspirations to do well academically. At the clinical level many students feel unprepared for clinical training activities and fear they will fail to meet patients' needs and/or will be criticized by peers and professors. Many of these students seek to preserve a sense of well-being by maintaining their health and relying on significant others for support. A developmental perspective is employed for interpreting the findings.

摘要:
The authors explain why they use self-directed learning to educate medical educators and why they think self-directed learning should be encouraged in other spheres of medical education. They argue that self-directed learning (SDL): suits the needs of a heterogeous learning group; helps learners prepare for continuing professional education; is important fm teachers of others to experience; can be applied within existing educational structures; assists learners to overcome the effects of personal, educational, social or political oppression to some extent; and enables progressive educators to give greater expression to their philosophies.

摘要:
An educational programme has been designed to enable family physicians to update their knowledge in an area of rheumatology and to provide practical guidance in managing common problems. This self-directed learning package is in the form of two patient management problems. These present some common situations in a patient with rheumatoid arthritis at different stages in the disease process. At each stage the physician is able to compare his response with that of the author and is directed to the relevant section of the second part; a discussion section outlining rationale and background fm the decision taken. The package may be used as an exercise, and the discussion section as a source of supplementary information. Our programme offers physicians an opportunity to achieve aims similar to those of the traditional continuing medical education (CME) refresher course at their own convenience. It is hoped that a format combining problem-solving with a discussion of common clinical topics will prove of value in the field of continuing medical education.

Health Care Expo′85s was an experiment in health education, combining education for the public, physicians and nurses in one site (a convention center) over 1 week. The educational formats were primarily lectures, seminars and educational exhibits. The attendance by each type of participant was disappointing. Overall, the education for the physicians and nurses was rated highly, although there was little interest on the part of health professionals in the exhibits or the parts of the program addressed to the public. The lack of success in terms of money and attendance was probably related to the timing, possibly the location, the tuition, the concept of combining education for several groups in one location, and insufficient advertising. Anyone considering such a combined endeavor will need to address these issues to improve the chances of success.
