摘要:
Three concentrations of povidone iodine, chlorhexidine, benzalkonium chloride, and a pluronic polyol were tested for antimicrobial efficacy and tissue reaction in wounds inoculated withStaphyloccocus aureus.Five paired incisions were created on the back of each of 16 dogs in four treatment groups. Five wounds were inoculated with beta‐hemolytic, coagulase positiveS. aureus(109organisms); the contralateral wounds were not inoculated. After two hours, three wounds on each side were irrigated with antiseptic in low, medium, or high concentrations; another was irrigated with physiological saline; and one was left untreated. One hundred ml of solution was applied in each instance with a syringe and needle at approximately 8 psi.Tissue bacteria were quantitated immediately following irrigation. The wounds were sutured with 5/0 monofilament stainless steel and bandaged. After 48 hours, the dogs were euthanized and signs of wound infection were recorded. Wound bacteria were quantitated again, and sections of the wounds were removed for examination by light microscopy.Antiseptics were significantly effective (p<0.01) in reducing the bacterial population in contaminated wounds when compared to control wounds on the same dog. High antiseptic concentrations were more effective than low concentrations. At 48 hours, the bacterial population was significantly lower in wounds treated with chlorhexidine or benzalkonium chloride compared with povidone iodine or pluronic polyol. The antiseptics caused no significant difference (p<0.01) in tissue reaction in noninoculated wounds. Chlorhexidine (0.5 or 1.0%) was the most effective antiseptic under the conditions use

摘要:
A technique that utilizes transposition of the internal obturator muscle for repair of perineal hernias was evaluated. Forty‐two male dogs were followed for at least one year after surgery. The repair failed in only one animal, a dog with previously operated bilateral hernias. Microangiography demonstrated an adequate blood supply to the transposed internal obturator muscles of two dogs examined at three weeks and three months after surger

摘要:
Case histories of 130 dogs and cats with humeral fractures were reviewed. The different types of fractures were classified. Most animals with proximal, shaft, and supracondylar fractures had excellent results. The poor prognosis associated with distal articular fractures was due most often to failure of the fixation device in the supracondylar area; best results were achieved with a plate on the caudal and medial surface of the distal humerus.

摘要:
Wound closure utilizing tension‐relieving incisions located in the skin adjacent to the wound of horses was evaluated in three experiments. Healing of lower limb wounds was compared in four treatment groups; wounds sutured under tension, wounds sutured with 7 mm and 10 mm tension relieving incisions, and unsutured controls. The wounds sutured using 10 mm tension relieving incisions healed significantly faster than the other three groups (p>0.05). The mesh expansion technique was further evaluated in four‐week‐old granulating wounds. The technique was found to be unsuccessful because the tension relieving incisions that were used were too small and postoperative support was inadequate. The technique was evaluated in two clinical patients, both of which had large metatarsal lacerations. Tension relieving incisions of approximately 15 mm were made and full leg walking bar casts were applied. Both wounds had healed almost completely on removal of the casts four weeks postoperat

摘要:
Surgical exploration of the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses of dogs is often necessary to diagnose or treat conditions causing complete or partial nasal obstruction. Hemorrhage may obscure exploration and be detrimental to the patient. Temporary occlusion of both common carotid arteries reduces blood loss and enhances visualization during rhinotomy. Temporary bilateral common carotid artery occlusion was performed on 15 dogs subjected to nasal exploration. No obvious detrimental effects were noted.

摘要:
Four pairs of ASIF MP35N stainless steel screws, one conventional smooth surfaced and one that had its surface modified by texturing with an ion‐beam, were inserted in the third metacarpus of six horses. The pairs of screws were placed from dorsal to palmar in the metaphyses and diaphysis of the bone using the lag‐screw principle. When the screws were examined at 90 and 150 days after insertion, micromovement was detected histologically but not radiographically around the screw in the dorsal cortex but not the palmar cortex. The removal torque of all screws 90 days after insertion was reduced compared to the insertion torque, and no difference was found between the rough and smooth screws. At 150 days after insertion, the removal torque of the smooth screws remained low, but the removal torque of the rough screws was increased significantly (p<0.001). The removal torque of both smooth and rough screws was significantly higher in the diaphysis than in the metaphysis (p<0.02). Since the need for a screw's holding ability is greatest early after fracture repair, it is doubtful that ion‐beam textured screws have any advantage over smooth screws in the repair of metacarpal fractures. The response of the dorsal and palmar cortices indicated that the equine metacarpus undergoes bending during loading and that the dorsal and palmar cortices of the bone move relative to each

摘要:
An 11‐day‐old Thoroughbred colt was presented because of acute colic and a swollen right carpus. Exploration of the abdomen revealed peritonitis secondary to a perforated gastric ulcer. The ulcer was repaired, and the peritoneal cavity was lavaged. The foal recovered from the perforated ulcer but was euthanized one and a half months later because of progressive septic arthri

摘要:
The synovial tissue response to three different suture materials was assessed in nine dogs. Stifle joint arthrotomies were sutured with either chromic gut, teflon coated polyester suture, or polypropylene suture; all joint capsule layers were penetrated, exposing the suture material to the joint cavity. The synoviocytic and subsynviocytic layers at the arthrotomy site were examined histologically one, two, and three weeks following surgery. Chromic gut caused the greatest cellular inflammatory response and polypropylene the least. Teflon coated polyester and chromic gut were associated with nearly the same degree of tissue fibrosis. Polypropylene was associated with much less fibrosis than the other suture materials.
