摘要:
Forty canine hock joints were used to study the anatomy and function of the medial and lateral tarsocrural collateral ligament complexes. Dissection of the ligaments was used to describe the anatomic arrangement, and location and tenseness in various positions. The component parts of the ligament complexes were evaluated for their contribution to stability of the tarsocrural joint. The medial and lateral tarsocrural collateral ligament complexes were composed of several components. The medial tibiotalar and lateral calcaneofibular short component parts were important static joint stabilizers in both flexion and extension. The long medial and lateral ligaments and the medial tibiocentral short component were less important in maintaining joint stability in flexion but were important in extension. The stability of the joint as a whole did not depend on any individual ligament component, but rather all components of the ligament complex, including the joint capsule and malleoli, acted together to stabilize the joint.

摘要:
A technique for replacement of the medial and lateral collateral ligaments of the tarsocrural joint in dogs was developed based on studies of normal anatomy and function. The medial or lateral tarsocrural joint was made unstable by removal of the respective malleolus, ligaments, and joint capsule; the component parts of the collateral ligaments were replaced using suture material to function as ligament prostheses. The technique was found to be effective in maintaining near normal joint motion and adequate joint stability in cadavers immediately following surgery, and in dogs observed for up to 39 months postoperatively. No degenerative joint disease was noted upon gross or radiographic examination.

摘要:
Of 285 dogs with gastric volvulus treated surgically, 30 (10.5%) required partial gastrectomy because of necrosis along the greater curvature of the body or fundic region of the stomach. Initially, the 30 dogs were treated with intravenous administration of lactated Ringer's solution, antibiotics, and corticosteroids. The stomach was decompressed with an oral gastric tube or by percutaneous gastrocentesis. Diagnosis of gastric volvulus was made by abdominal radiography and confirmed at surgery. At surgery, the stomach was decompressed and repositioned. Gastric viability was determined by evaluation of serosal color and perfusion, vascular patency, the degree of active bleeding from the incised gastric wall, and by palpation of the gastric wall; intravenous fluorescein dye evaluation was performed in some dogs. Twenty‐seven dogs developed postoperative complications, 19 (63%) of which died. Eleven dogs recovere

摘要:
Tissue considered to be testicle was removed from the scrotum of a horse considered previously to be cryptorchid. Close anatomical inspection after emasculation revealed the presence of the vas deferens, intact epididymis, pampiniform plexus, and a severely atrophic testicle. Histologic examination of the tissue confirmed the presence of an atrophic testicle. Accurate anatomic identification at the time of surgery prevented the need for exploration of the inguinal canal or abdomen.

摘要:
A method of repair of the dog's cranial cruciate ligament, using a vascular patellar tendon* graft (VPT), is described. The vascular anatomy of the graft was evaluated in an experimental study in 18 dogs. The blood supply to the VPTs was evaluated at various intervals from 0 to 16 weeks and was found to be preserved in all but two of the specimens examined. It was concluded that the VPT technique could maintain vascularity to the graft from the onset.

摘要:
The urinary bladder was excised, and the ureters were implanted into an isolated segment of distal jejunum and ileum in three experimental dogs. The isolated bowel loop was drawn through the pelvic canal within the external anal sphincter to exit ventral to the anus. The dogs were evaluated for urinary continence, urinary tract infection, and renal function for up to 6 months postoperatively.Urinary continence did not return. Continuous urine leakage caused perineal scalding. The cutaneous openings of the isolated bowel loops developed strictures. Serum creatinine and urea nitrogen concentrations did not increase. Excretory urography and retrograde radiographic studies of the bowel loop were performed periodically. Unilateral hydronephrosis was observed in two dogs 2 weeks postoperatively. The remainder of the excretory urograms were normal. Ureteral reflux was observed commonly on retrograde contrast studies. Positive bacterial cultures were obtained from all bowel loops and kidneys at necropsy. Alpha‐streptococcus,Escherichia coli, and Proteus spp. were isolated most frequently. Mild pyelitis was seen in histopathologic examination of the kidneys after necropsy. Urothelium replaced bowel mucosa near the site of ureteral implantation. This method of urinary diversion is not satisfactory for clinical us

摘要:
Urethrotomy was performed on 12 normal male dogs at the base of the os penis. The surgical site was allowed to heal by second intention in six dogs, and suture closure of the urethral mucosa, tunica albuginea, and subcuticular tissue was performed in six dogs. All dogs were maintained for 60 days postoperatively. Packed cell volume and serum total protein were measured before surgery and at 2, 4, 7, 14, and 60 days postoperatively. Suture closure of the urethra resulted in less hemorrhage during the postoperative recovery period. Urethral mucosal irregularity was seen in urethrograms performed on all operated dogs 60 days postoperatively. Urethral stricture was not observed in any of the dogs in this study.
