摘要:
Repair of lateral luxation of the patella in horses and cows has consistently produced poor results; reluxation, muscle atrophy, septic arthritis, and degenerative joint disease are frequent postoperative complications of the techniques previously described. A new technique for repair of congenital lateral luxation of the patella in foals and calves is described; it includes lateral release of the patella followed by imbrication of the medial aspect of the joint capsule. Postoperative evaluation, up to 1½ years, confirmed the efficacy of the technique with retention of normal patellar position and range of motion. Muscle atrophy and lameness disappeared completely in 2 animals, which showed no radiographic evidence of degenerative joint disease at the time of surgical repair. Since the preparation of this article, 3 more calves have been successfully repaired with excellent clinical results up to 12 weeks postoperatively

摘要:
Four horses were examined because of inspiratory dyspnea and noise resulting from an inability to abduct one or both arytenoid cartilages. Two unilateral arytenoidectomies were done following failure of laryngoplasty, and two bilateral arytenoidectomies were done to correct permanent arytenoid adduction caused by laryngeal ossification. The surgical procedure included submucosal dissection of the arytenoid cartilage and removal of the vocal fold, lateral ventricle (when present), and the arytenoid cartilage, excluding the muscular process. Excessive mucous membrane was pulled caudally from the opening of the larynx and carefully sutured to close the mucous membrane and smooth the rima glottis. Postoperative swelling was greatest between the 3rd and 7th days. Long‐term results included one horse returned to normal function with no noise, one horse returned to normal function but with respiratory noise, one horse returned to light riding with reduced noise, and one horse salvaged for pasture us

摘要:
The results of a study designed to evaluate a fluoroalkyl cyanoacrylate tissue adhesive as an adjunct to suture anastomosis of the severed canine pelvic urethra are presented. The urethral anastomotic sites were evaluated by contrast radiography, gross pathology, and histopathology. Urethral anastomosis resulted in a clinically functional urethra in all 6 control dogs (suture anastomosis) and 5 of the 6 test dogs (suture anastomosis plus adhesive). A severe stricture at the anastomotic site developed in 1 dog in the test group. Evidence of leakage was detected by contrast radiography in 1 dog of each group. Microscopic evidence of incomplete closure was detected in 4 control dogs and 2 test dogs. An extensive granulomatous inflammatory reaction was associated with use of the adhesive. The lower incidence of microscopic leakage observed in the test dogs was attributed to fibroplasia induced by the cyanoacrylate and not to the adhesive properties of the cyanoacrylate.

摘要:
Our intent was to evaluate clinically total hip arthroplasty in the dog using the same procedures and prostheses. We replaced 20 hips in 15 dogs of both sexes and various breeds, weights, and ages. All animals exhibited pain caused by degenerative joint disease of one or both coxofemoral joints. Using Amstutz's system of grading at a minimum of 12 months post‐operatively, none of the hips replaced were graded poor, 12.5% were graded fair, 12.5% good, and 75% excellent. Loosening of prosthetic components was by far the most common problem encountered in this study. Luxations were virtually eliminated by the use of the Richards Canine II total hip replacement system. Infections were found to be directly proportional to surgery time, number of operations performed, or both. Component failure occurred only when the size of the prosthesis was not properly matched to the size of the dog. Although these problems still must be overcome, we conclude that total hip arthroplasty is a valuable adjunct to veterinary medicine in selected case

摘要:
This study reviews the records of all dogs that underwent dorsal decompressive laminectomy for thoracolumbar disc disease at the Angell Memorial Animal Hospital during a 2‐year period. Findings as to age, breed, sex, and site of disc protrusion did not differ from those published by others. All dogs were operated on within 36 hours of the onset of inability to walk. The overall recovery rate was 80.6%. The recovery rate of dogs that had preoperative sensory perception was 89.5%, but was only 50.0% for those without sensory perception. The most important factor determining recovery rate was the presence or absence of preoperative sensory perceptio
