ABSTRACTA descriptive study using a two‐round Delphi survey was performed to determine a partial consensus of the nurse‐midwives attending 1982 ACNM convention on what they predict the predominant setting for nurse‐midwifery practice will be in 1992, and what, if any, will be the obstacles to the realization of their forecasts. A two‐thirds majority of CNMs surveyed forecasted that in 1992, hospitals and birth centers will be the most prevalent site for nurse‐midwife deliveries. All together, 92% wished to be practicing in a birth center exclusively or in combination with hospital and/or home settings 10 years from now. ABSTRACTThis article reviews the practices and progress of midwives in Missouri during the second half of the nineteenth century. A description is included of early midwifery schools, a professional society of midwives, and the first American midwifery journal. The regulation of midwifery and the diminishing numbers of midwives in this state after 1900 are also discussed.

ABSTRACTFrom 1 July 1978 to 30 June 1982, the Tucson Nurse‐Midwifery Service registered approximately 1000 clients for obstetrical care. Of these, 838 were followed to delivery by the nurse‐midwives. This paper presents an overview of the Service, and the statistics related to these 838 clients, including a description of the age, parity, and extent of prenatal care of these clients; a review of the antepartal tests, complications, and admissions; a discussion of the nurse‐midwifery management of labor, complications of labor, and transfers in labor; a summary of the modes of delivery; an enumeration of postpartum complications for all modes of delivery; and a report of the neonatal outcomes in terms of birth weights, Apgar scores, incidence of complications and numbers of d
