摘要:
ABSTRACTThis preexperimental study explored the relationships among maternal aerobic exercise, self‐esteem, and physical discomforts during pregnancy by comparing groups of exercising and nonexercising pregnant women. The convenience sample was comprised of 31 women who participated in aerobic exercise and 22 women who did not. All subjects, who were at least 27 weeks pregnant, completed three questionnaires: Self‐History Form, Pregnancy Discomfort Checklist, and Rosenberg Self‐Esteem Scale. The group of women who exercised had statistically significant higher self‐esteem and lower physical discomfort scores than the group of women who did not exercise. Statistically significant lower scores were found in the exercise group for the symptoms of backache, headache, fatigue, shortness of breath, and hot flashes. There was a statistically significant inverse relationship between amount of exercise and discomforts reported in the third trimester. These findings suggest that exercise during pregnancy is associated with higher self‐esteem and lower discomfort scores. However, interpretation of these findings is limited by a lack of random assignment to groups, which might have resulted in a selec

摘要:
ABSTRACTTeen Pregnancy Service (TPS), a comprehensive, full‐time interdisciplinary health care facility featuring certified nurse‐midwives (CNMs) is described. Based on 3 years (1982–1985) of retrospective data, 77% of the 662 teens enrolled in TPS were delivered by CNMs who saw each teen for an average of over ten prenatal sessions. Maternal outcomes including low rates of anemia (2.4%), pregnancy‐induced hypertension (1.7%), and cesarean sections (11.6%), as well as other data, are reported. Infant outcomes indicated an average gestational age of 39 weeks and a mean birth weight of 7 lb; other outcome data for the babies are reported. The unique training of CNMs combined with the health‐oriented, educational philosophy of TPS represents a favorable service match for the preg

摘要:
ABSTRACTThis descriptive study examines the perceptions of women regarding the therapeutic value of touch received during labor. Thirty women who had a normal spontaneous vaginal birth attended by a nurse‐midwife were interviewed during the immediate post‐partal period. This study showed that various aspects of touch can be therapeutic during labor. Touch was perceived most frequently as therapeutic during the transition phase of labor—a finding that disputes current conceptual literature. Therapeutic touch meant sympathy, participation, and encouragement, and was perceived as able to reduce pain. Hand holding was the type of touch most consistent in therapeutic value throughout labor. The findings of this study showed that received touch was helpful to the woman in labor because it helped her cope with the exper

摘要:
ABSTRACTComplete understanding of the problems besetting the profession of nurse‐midwifery requires consideration of both internal and external barriers to success. A recent national survey report focused exclusively on external barriers, ignoring the potentially more difficult barriers coming from within the profession. These include uncertainty about professional identity and disagreement over strategies for promotio

摘要:
ABSTRACTNurse‐midwifery care can adapt to incorporate birth customs and practices of immigrant groups seeking childbirth care. This paper explores birthing traditions among the Hmong, Laotian people. Fifteen Hmong men and women immigrants to Isla Vista, California were interviewed. The information gathered revealed the need to maintain traditional Hmong customs to facilitate both physical and emotional well‐being during childbirth in the United States. Birthing and dietary traditions can be adapted within the hospital setting, if the nurse‐midwife is aware of the

摘要:
ABSTRACTThe process of peer review for health care professionals has received a lot of attention in recent years. Peer review helps professionals maintain safety and currency in practice with a rapidly changing knowledge base. It addresses the increasing public concern for safe health care and their decreasing trust of individual health care practitioners. Most articles on peer review have described either an individual approach or an institutional approach to quality assurance. This article suggests that peer review is a profession's responsibility and describes the process of peer review of certified nurse‐midwives on a state‐wide le
