ABSTRACTThe refugees of Southeast Asia continue to enter the United States in large numbers and have many health care needs. Specific data on normal growth and normative processes are lacking in these diverse cultural groups. Perinatal parameters among Cambodian and Hmong families were studied and compared with those of a Caucasian control group. The birth weight, length, and head circumference were smaller and distributed around different means among both refugee groups, although the ponderal indexes and measures of gestational maturity were the same as the control group. Perinatal complications, including cesarean section rate, were less among the refugee groups. The Cambodian and Hmong women had a higher parity and gravidity. They were shorter and lighter at the onset of pregnancy and their mean total weight gain was less than 10 kg. A substantially higher incidence of infectious disease was present among these groups. Households were large, especially among the Hmong, and the prior birth interval in this group was less than two years.

ABSTRACTThis descriptive survey seeks to identify the level of client compliance and accuracy in using the Cardiff Count‐to‐ten fetal activity chart, what specific difficulties clients experience in using the chart, and how clients respond to a movement alarm signal. Clinician behaviors that may hinder clients' use of the chart are identified, and suggestions for more effective guidance are offered. One hundred and two postpartum women at Oklahoma Memorial Hospital were surveyed. Client compliance was found to be inadequate: 27% of the subjects reported filling out the chart less than 50% of the time; and 65% experiencing a movement alarm signal did not notify their care providers. Thirty‐five percent of subjects filling out a sample Count‐to‐ten chart failed to do so accurately. Clients had problems with marking the chart properly, defining an eligible kick, and using the chart when they could not start counting at precisely 9:00 AM. ABSTRACTPregnancy after age 30 is considered late in the reproductive life of a woman and many obstetric clinicians believe that the older woman who is pregnant for the first time is at a greater risk statistically for labor dysfunction. This study was designed to discover whether or not a relationship exists between nulliparas over 30 and an increased frequency of labor dysfunction. The target population consisted of four groups of nulliparous women between the ages of 20 and 40 who delivered at Rose Medical Center and University Hospital between 1980 and 1983. Data gathered from each group consisted of objective evidence indicating the presence or absence of factors that fell under the definition of labor dysfunction.
