摘要:
ABSTRACTA survey of women's interests in alternative maternity facilities was conducted in Salt Lake County, Utah. Results demonstrated that women do have an interest in alternative maternity facilities, the birthing suite having the greatest market potential. There were no significant differences between women who preferred the traditional maternity facility, birthing suite, birth center, and homebirth on the following variables: Age, years of education, religion, annual income, and parity. Several obstacles to marketing alternative maternity facilities were identified and discussed. A procedure for market sampling is also described.

摘要:
ABSTRACTThe California Psychological Inventory (CPI) was administered to 36 women who were accepted into two different urban, northeast, nurse‐midwifery education programs. Two years later, it was determined whether or not these subjects had completed their nurse‐midwifery education programs without difficulty and had entered the practice of midwifery. Then a step‐wise discriminant analysis was performed on their CPI scale scores to determine which combination of scale scores best differentiated the group that completed without difficulty and was practicing from those who were not. The Socialization, Dominance, Tolerance, and Self‐Control scales, taken together, accounted for the group membership of all except two of the subjects. It is suggested that these findings be cross‐validated on another sample of subjects to determine if the CPI is predictive of success in nurse‐midwifery education a

摘要:
ABSTRACTTwenty first‐time fathers who had attended prenatal classes were interviewed before and after attending their wives' childbirth to determine the father's special needs at this time. The same fifty‐item questionnaire was utilized in both the predelivery and the postdelivery interviews. Motivation for involvement in childbirth was explored in the predelivery interview. The most frequent motivations for involvement in childbirth were “to share the birth,” and “to enhance the couple relationship.” The responses differed little in the pre‐ and postdelivery interviews. In the postdelivery interview, more fathers wanted to know the baby's condition as soon as possible after birth and wanted to have the nurse at their wives' bedside as much as possible during labor. Most of the fathers had high needs for understanding, nurturance, and deference during labor. Most fathers wanted the nurses to take care of their emotional needs rather than their physical needs (hunger and rest). Assisting their wives in labor was considered to be a great achievement by the fathers. Few fathers felt overpowered or anxious about the environment of the labor suite or the birth itself. This study concluded that further research with fathers who do not attend prenatal class

ABSTRACTThe history and development of the Northeast Regional Council on Education for Nurse‐Midwifey (NERCEN) is described. The purpose of the educational consortium, reasons for development, and specific accomplishments and future plans are included. This is an example of a consortium that has been successful, and can easily be replicated throughout the United States in areas where geographic distance is not prohibitive of frequent meetings or where members utiliie other forms of communication to share educational resources and learn from each othe

摘要:
ABSTRACTThe plight of Third World women and infants has been simplified and presented in a biased manner in the public as well as in some of the professional media. Poverty, and its many ramifications, is more to “blame” than is the formula industry for the morbidity/mortality of these infants and children: it can be shown that many poor womendo notbreastfeed because of choice and/or the cultural practice of early supplemental feeding; or that theycannotbreastfeed because of malnourishment and lack of support (mothering) for themselves. Such women and infants desperately need safe, nutritious, available supplementary and weanling foods. The concerned among us must transfer our energies from witch hunting toward ameliorating the horrendous conditions under which most of the world still li

摘要:
ABSTRACTUrgent action to promote the health and nutrition of infants and young children by governments, international agencies, nongovernmental organizations, and the infantfood industry was called for by the WHO/UNICEF meeting of infant and young child feeding, which was held in Geneva from 9 to 12 October 1979.The meeting, chaired by Professor F. T. Sai,* was concerned primarily with the development of practical measures to improve infant and young child feeding practices, and was attended by some 140 participants that included representatives of governments and United Nations specialized agencies, members of concerned nongovernmental organizations, and representatives from the infant‐food industry. The themes for discussion at the meeting included:‐ how to encourage and support breastfeeding;‐ promotion and support of appropriate weaning practices;‐ promotion of information, education and training of health workers concerning breastfeeding;‐ the health and social status of women in relation to infant and young child feeding;‐ appropriate marketing and distribution of breastmilk substitutes;‐ suggested actions for governments and other groups. The meeting adopted by consensus a Statement, which highlighted poor infant feeding practices and their consequences as “one of the world's major problems and a serious obstacle to social and economic development.” To a great extent it is a man‐made problem which, despite three decades of efforts by national and international bodies, continues to take a heavy toll in deaths and long‐term mental and physical disability. In addition to the Statement, the meeting issued recommendations for urgent action concerning the matters discussed. The full text of the Statement and the recommend
