摘要:
ABSTRACTTwenty formally unprepared fathers who attended childbirth in a large Southeastern hospital were interviewed in order to determine their needs for on‐the‐spot preparation. Results indicated that the fathers had very negative expectations of childbirth but in fact found the experience to be meaningful and positive. Common reactions and specific vivid sensations were catalogued. Recommendations include (1) relaxing policies which bar unprepared fathers from delivery areas and (2) providing reassuring and clear guidelines concerning the father's expected behaviors along with orientation to upcoming procedu

摘要:
ABSTRACTThe future prospects of the nurse‐midwifery profession are evaluated by considering both the factors which support and also those which may impede continued growth. Nurse‐midwifery's contribution to health policy goals, in particular, increased access to services and cost containment; consumer preference for this provider; and the uniqueness of the content of care given in nurse‐midwifery practice all portend favorably for the future of the profession. Factors which might jeopardize continued growth include an oversupply of obstetricians and legal and reimbursement constraints. Reckoning with the possible effects of a physician oversupply may be the most important task facing the profe

摘要:
ABSTRACTThe choice of in‐hospital or alternative birth environment was studied as a function of the concept of control. Personal and situational control variables were assessed, using the Multidimensional Health Locus‐of‐Control Scale and an attitude scale specific to issues of chioce in childbirth. A multivariate analysis demonstrated that a matched sample of choosers of both environments differed significantly on four of five dimensions studied. These findings point to a need for flexibility in hospital policies governing childbirth since individual freedom of choice is so important to some women and since alternative birthing services are still so

摘要:
ABSTRACTAdult learning principles provide the theoretical base for an antepartum clinical experience for nurse‐midwifery students, which is extended in time to allow for continuity of care to a group of pregnant women. This experience is seen as a catalyst for meaningful integration of scientific knowledge, manual skills, clinical problem solving, and behavioral science concepts. To bring these varied aspects of education into a unified basis for practice is the goal of education for nurse‐midwifery practice. Integrated learning is exemplified in students' requests for feedback on their communication skills as well as manual skills and clinical management pl
