摘要:
Cycloplegics, corticosteroids, and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs have been applied in the treatment of postoperative inflammation following cataract extraction. Of these, topical preparations of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, such as ketorolac tromethamine 0.5% and diclofenac sodium 0.1%, offer comparable efficacy to corticosteroids in the reduction of postoperative inflammation, and offer lower risks of adverse events in most patients. Comparative studies of these drugs from the past 5 years are highlighted.

摘要:
Despite the high frequency of cataract surgery, there are still no definitive studies on antibiotic prophylaxis against endophthalmitis after cataract surgery. Most surgeons follow an empiric approach. The results of several recent studies shed additional light on this complex topic. There is better knowledge of the usual source of the infection and the specific organisms incriminated. This review presents some principles of prophylactic treatment and selected literature that addresses the effectiveness of antisepsis, topical preoperative antibiotics, intracameral antibiotics, subconjunctival antibiotics, systemic antibiotics, and postoperative antibiotics. The worldwide problem of antibiotic resistance should temper our approach. Some organizational statements are reviewed, and personal recommendations are offered. Controversy still abounds.

摘要:
Despite advances in treatment and diagnosis, postoperative endophthalmitis (POE) is still not an entirely manageable complication after cataract surgery. This review focuses on recent developments regarding epidemiology, diagnosis based on the polymerase chain reaction method, experimental antibiotic therapy and clinical experience with intravitreal steroids, and experimental findings of the inflammatory process of POE, all of which are areas that may contribute to a broader understanding of POE.

摘要:
Research is continually seeking to better describe the relationship between pseudophakic capsular opacification and underlying cell biology, surgical technique, and intra-ocular lens biomaterial and design. Outcomes are reviewed from prospective, randomized studies that investigate the importance of capsulorhexis size, pharmacological treatment, and lens material in influencing capsular opacification and the need for capsulotomy. The results of several studies support the role of lens edge profile in inhibiting lens epithelial cell migration. A large post-mortem study also examines how lens type may affect anterior capsular opacification formation. Of particular interest is a histological report that sheds additional light on understanding cellular processes in posterior capsu-lar opacification.
