摘要:
AbstractThe low‐temperature fluid properties of synthetic base fluids are described, showing how these properties are related to the molecular structure of the base fluid. Examples are given of how the principles of molecular design can be used to improve the low‐temperature properties of synthetic base fluids, focusing on esters derived from both natural and petrochemical raw materials. Results of studies using calorimetric and spectroscopic methods, including differential scanning calorimetry and nuclear magnetic resonance are presented, showing how these techniques can be used to give more detailed insight into the changes occurring in fluids at low temperatu

摘要:
AbstractThis paper presents results of work carried out to produce phosphate esters of the alkyl‐aryl type. Three new triesters of mixed structure have been synthesised using a special alcohol with an aryl content, e.g., 2‐phenoxy ethanol, and a very long branched alcohol, e.g., isotridecanol. The influence of the aryl content and the effect of the long aliphatic chain on the main tribological properties have been investiga

摘要:
AbstractThis paper describes the preparation and performance evaluation of a synthetic aluminium complex grease. The aluminium complex grease was prepared in situ by reacting stearic acid and benzoic acid in the presence of a synthetic base oil, polyalphaolefin. The preparation of the soap (aluminium benzoate stearate hydroxide) was monitored using Fourier transform infrared. Two different extreme‐pressure additives blended with the prepared aluminium complex grease were evaluated for their extreme‐pressure activity in four‐ball and Timken tests. These greases exhibited higher Timken OK loads (60 lb), lower values of wear‐scar diameter at higher loads, and higher values of weld load in the four‐ball test than the aluminium complex grease without additive. The blended greases were also found to pass rust and corrosion, oxidation‐stability, and shear‐stability tests. The topography of the specimens after four‐ball testing was studied with scanning elec

摘要:
AbstractThe load‐carrying capacity, antiwear, and friction reduction properties of a novel S—P—N additive (BMDDP) added to a synthetic lubricant, polyalphaolefin (PAO), were evaluated using a four‐ball test machine. The results were compared with those of a commercial S—P—N additive (T307), and show that BMDDP is an excellent extreme pressure and antiwear additive in polyalphaolefin, similar to T307. The rubbed surfaces were investigated using X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and the antiwear mechanism

摘要:
AbstractHistorically, the best lubrication performance has been achieved by the use of synthetic fluids, such as polyalphaolefins or esters. Advanced commercial processing techniques for producing base oils through significant molecular change are now available. In many applications, automotive and industrial products formulated with these high‐quality API Group III speciality base fluids can achieve the same good performance as that from traditional synthetic fluids. This paper represents continued work to understand and demonstrate features of very high viscosity index (VHVI) speciality base fluids. Ultimately, the performance of a finished fluid is the key market requirement. Actual field performance can vary dramatically, even among polyalphaolefin‐based formulations. Several examples are given to show that equivalent high‐level synthetic performance can be delivered through a synergistic balance of VHVI speciality base fluids and additive chem
